Former UFC Contender Sara McMann Welcomes Invicta Champ Lauren Murphy at UFC Maine

Sara McMannAfter failing to wrest the belt from UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey, former Olympian Sara McMann will face another champion in her next bout.

McMann will welcome Invicta FC bantamweight champion Lauren Murphy to the Octagon at UFC Fight Night 47, promotion officials announced on Thursday.

UFC Fight Night 47: Bader vs. St. Preux takes place on Aug. 16 at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, Maine.

McMann (7-1) suffered the first defeat of her career when Rousey unleashed a brutal knee to the midsection in their UFC 170 headlining bout, securing a 1:06 TKO stoppage.

Looking to get back to the form that saw her win the first seven fights of her career, McMann welcomes Invicta’s first bantamweight champion, Lauren Murphy, to the UFC in a bout that could have happened under the all-women’s promotion banner.

Before moving over to the UFC, McMann had won an eliminator bout against Shayna Baszler, making her one of the top contender’s for the 135-pound strap.

Murphy (8-0) was part of the group of women that replenished Invicta’s 135-pound ranks when many of the promotion’s top fighters, like McMann, transferred to the UFC.

She quickly made an impact, winning decisions over top contenders Kaitlin Young and Sarah D’Alelio before scoring a TKO stoppage of Miriam Nakamoto to win the bantamweight belt.

Instead of defending the belt, however, Murphy has been granted passage to the Octagon, where she’ll try and upset McMann to become a UFC title contender in her own right.

A light heavyweight bout between Ryan Bader and Ovince St. Preux headlines the UFC Fight Night 47 card.
