Newton’s drug test result was positive for marijuana metabolites, showing a result above 100 ng/mL, Mike Mazzulli, the director of the Mohegan Tribe Department of Athletic Regulation, told MMAWeekly.com. The MMA Report initially posted the news.
While the World Anti-Doping Agency and the Nevada Athletic Commission have a threshold of 150 ng/mL before a positive result for marijuana is returned, the Mohegan Tribe has a zero tolerance policy on illegal substances.
Bellator and Newton have already been notified of the test result, said Mazzulli.
Newton was subsequently fined $3,000, suspended for 90 days, and must provide a clean drug test prior to returning to competition.
Newton won the interim Bellator light heavyweight championship in late 2013 and then unified the title in early 2014. He defended the belt twice before McGeary won a five-round unanimous decision over him at Bellator 134 on Feb. 27 at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn.
