The first ever UFC card in Russia has just landed a huge heavyweight fight as former champion Fabricio Werdum is expected to face Alexey Oleynik at Sept. 15 in Moscow.
Sources close to the contest confirmed the news on Monday following rumors of the bout first surfacing as reported by MMAFighting. UFC officials have not confirmed the matchup yet.
The former heavyweight champion will look to redeem himself when he makes his return to action in September.
Meanwhile, Oleynik is coming off a submission victory over Junior Albini at UFC 224 in Brazil where he used his patented Ezekiel choke to get the win. Oleynik now has five victories in the UFC with three of those wins coming by way of submission.
Now Oleynik will test his ground skills against arguably the most accomplished heavyweight grappler in UFC history in Werdum.
The fight between Werdum and Oleynik is the first rumored bout to for the UFC’s debut card in Russia on Sept. 15 with more matchups expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
