Urijah Faber had a capacity crown on his side at the ARCO Arena in Sacramento against Raphael Assuncao and “The California Kid” delivered, finishing the Brazilian by submission in the final round.

The opening stanza could have gone either way, but Faber pulled ahead as the fight went on, dropping Assuncao with right hands in both the second and third rounds.

The end came after a right hand sent Assuncao to the canvas, and as the Brazilian worked his way back to his feet, Faber took his back and slipped in a rear naked choke forcing the 27-year-old to tap out.

With the win Faber will likely get a shot at Jose Aldo’s crown.

“I’m ready to get that belt,” Faber told the hometown crowd. “We have a great champion right now. Jose Aldo is a phenom. He’s talented and he’s creative. I’d love to get in there and get that belt.”

Following the fight Aldo entered the cage and accepted the challenge. “I respect Urijah, but no one’s going to take my belt,” said the champion.

Faber got the last word in, saying, “I’ve got to bring my A-game. Like I said, he’s a tough guy, but in my mind that’s my belt.”
