Friday night in San Jose, California, Phil Baroni steps into the cage at Strikeforce for the biggest fight of his career when he faces MMA pioneer Frank Shamrock. He’s taking the fight, a battle for the vacant Strikeforce middleweight belt, very seriously, training like he never has before.

Baroni’s conditioning has come into question at various times in the past, but he doesn’t consider it a concern this time around. “I’m ready to push the pace for five rounds and break him,” said a confident Baroni. “I’m going to be on him the whole fight.”

The fight between Shamrock and Baroni is the main event of the co-promoted Strikeforce and EliteXC event on Showtime pay-per-view Friday night.

While most people consider this a huge fight for Baroni, he sees it as just as much of a challenge for Shamrock. “This will be the toughest fight ever in his life. I’m the toughest fighter he’s ever faced.”

Training both at American Kickboxing Academy in Calif. and Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas, Baroni looks to be in the best shape of his career. He seems to feel the same way and sees this as his time to show the world his worth as a fighter.

“I consider myself the best 185-pound fighter in the world, just some things haven’t gone my way.

“This is my time. This is my fight,” mused Baroni.
