The next contender at featherweight might have been determined at UFC 143, but now one of the fighters is out of the bout with potential title implications on the line.
Duke Roufus fighter Erik Koch has been forced off the card with an injury according to UFC officials.
Koch was set to face fellow top ten featherweight Dustin Poirier on the Super Bowl weekend card, but now he’ll get a replacement instead.
Both Koch and Poirier seemed poised for a run at the UFC featherweight title, with the winner of their fight possibly facing the winner in the UFC 142 main event between Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes.
Poirier will remain on the card and the UFC is currently looking for a candidate to step in to face him.
One potential candidate is Chan Sung Jung AKA The Korean Zombie. Jung blasted through former title contender Mark Hominick in less than 10 seconds at UFC 140 in Toronto, and said he was hoping to fight again soon after such a fast encounter.
On his Twitter account on Tuesday, Poirier sounded like he’d be interested in that fight as well.
“I’m sure the UFC will give me another great fight for 143, maybe the Zombie,” he wrote. “Sounds like a war to me!”
No word from the UFC yet on the potential of a match-up between Poirier and The Korean Zombie, but matchmaker Sean Shelby is likely burning up the phone lines now to solidify a replacement.
