Edwin Cooper Jr. excited to put on a show at LFA 80 in Albuquerque

January 17, 2020

For featherweight Edwin Cooper Jr., the measure of a successful year is not always found in how many victories he can rack up, as evidenced by his 2019.

Due to a distinct lack of fights in 2019, Cooper looks to his development as a fighter as the measure of what kind of year he turned out to have.

“For me last year was a great success for me and my team at Jackson-Wink,” Cooper told MMAWeekly.com. “I just wanted a lot more fight opportunities.

“I need some more opponents to come forward and be willing to step up and take the stage against me. I was definitely looking for more opponents and looking to get more fights throughout last year.”

Though he is happy with 2019 because of his growth, Cooper is eager to get things going in 2020.

“The great thing is moving forward and doing something I like to do,” said Cooper. “We’re starting this year with a fight early in January, and I’m looking forward to making it a successful year for my team and I.

“I take a lot of wisdom from the fighters around me at Jackson-Wink. Being surrounded by great teammates and coaches lets me see what I need to do that’s really going to count when it matters.”

For his first bout of 2020, Cooper (2-0) will face Sean William Cerveny (4-0) in a main card 145-pound bout at LFA 80 on Friday in Albuquerque, N.M.

“I’m excited to put on a show out here in Albuquerque,” Cooper said. “This is like my hometown now.

“I’m definitely up for the challenge. I’m ready to do a lot of stand-up, a lot of grappling, wherever the case it is to get the job done in spectacular fashion, I’m up for it.”

Following only one bout in 2019, Cooper is looking to be as active as he possibly can in 2020 and make a name for himself in the featherweight division.

“I want to fight every month,” said Cooper. “That’s my plan. I want to stay active. To be the next (big) thing, we’ve got to stay active until we get me on whatever platform wants to (showcase me).

“I’m ready to travel, go city to city, to do whatever I need to do to constantly put my name out there; to make people understand that I’m here, this is the real deal, and I’m coming 101% full-blast right through people. I’m looking forward to 2020.”
