Eddie Alvarez Was Shocked by Split Decision in Anthony Pettis Fight

Former Bellator MMA lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez defeated former UFC 155-pound titleholder Anthony Pettis in the recent UFC Fight Night 81 co-main event.

Alvarez pressed the pace the entire fight. He secured several takedowns and stifled Pettis’ ability to implement his diverse striking by controlling the distance.

“I thought it was all Avarez,” said UFC commentator Jon Anik during the event’s post show.

Eddie AlvarezAlvarez agreed with Anik’s assessment and felt that the decision should have been unanimous.

“I didn’t see a split decision,” said Alvarez during the event’s post-fight press conference. “I’m the type of fighter that assumes that I lose every round. I need my coach to tell me how I did. But that fight, in particular, I went back after the third [round], and I assumed that I had won to fight. To see a split, that was a little shocking for me.”

A win is a win, though. Unanimous or split, Alvarez still won and moved into the top contender slot in the UFC’s lightweight division.
