Doug Marshall’s Bellator Path is Simple: Get the Money, Get the Belt

Doug Marshall WEC 31In the years following his split with the WEC, former light heavyweight champion Doug “Rhino” Marshall has worked hard to find a next level promotion to call home and might have just done that with his recent performances in Bellator.

“I think my performances speak for themselves,” Marshall told “Two first-round knockouts against really high-ranked opponents; two guys who have never been knocked out before and I put their chins to the test and they lost.”

Having made a name for himself as one of the signature fighters in the pre-Zuffa era of the WEC, Marshall is happy to be with a company that can give him the base he’s been seeking.

“Me and the WEC had a long, long history together,” said Marshall. “I went out on my shield against Brian Stann and I guess they kind of forgot about me. I guess it is what it is and in their eyes I guess I didn’t have what it takes (to join the post-Zuffa buyout version of the company).

“Bellator is a great opportunity to show the world what I can do, build a fan base and entertain. As far as the other companies out there, I feel like I’m fighting for the best company. I’ve never been treated so well in my life.”

Having delivered so far for his new promotion, Marshall is looking to do so again this Thursday night in Temecula, Calif., at Bellator 92 live on Spike TV against Sultan Aliev in the second round of this season’s middleweight tournament.

“I’m just going to go out there and do my thing, just like I always do,” said Marshall. “The bottom line is he knows I’m going to punch him in the face really hard, but can he stop it?

“I’m going to go out there and impose my will and lay down my gameplan, keep it on the feet, and I’m going to beat him until I see an opening and then I’m going to put him to sleep.”

With a path laid ahead of him by the tournament format, the goal for the remainder of the year is simple for Marshall, win out and enjoy the fruits of his labor.

“The bottom line is I’m going to get that money and then get that belt,” he said. “That’s the path I’m heading down right there.”
