Darren Till Fails to Make Weight for UFC Liverpool Main Event

Darren Till failed to make weight for his main event fight against Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson on Saturday in Liverpool.

Till came in at 174.5 pounds — three and a half pounds over the welterweight limit for a non-title fight.

As of now, there’s no word on whether or not the main event will move forward after Till failed to make weight. UFC officials said a statement will be forthcoming on the main event.

[UPDATE – May 26, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. ET: Thompson and Till stepped on the scale at the ceremonial weigh-in with Till’s official weight still at 174.5 pounds. He will forfeit 30-percent of his fight purse to Thompson to keep the fight intact.]

It was a tense scene at the early morning weigh-ins as Till was the final fighter left to step onto the scale, yet there was no sign of him anywhere at the 11 a.m. (local time) cutoff time.

After several minutes of silence, UFC officials finally emerged and said due to a “family emergency,” Till had been given an extra hour to make weight, but he was already in the hotel where the weigh-ins were being held.

Stephen Thompson UFC 209About 25 minutes later, Till emerged from the back and quickly stepped on the scale behind a towel being held by UFC officials. His weight was read as 174.5 pounds as Till made a quick exit.

UFC officials then confirmed that Till would not be cutting any more weight and his official weight would be 174.5 pounds. Unfortunately, this is not the first time Till has failed to make weight. Last year, Till weighed in at 176 pounds for a welterweight fight in Sweden before eventually winning a unanimous decision the next night.

Thompson was one of the first fighters on the scale, as the majority of the card flooded in to make weight for the first ever UFC fight card in Liverpool. Thompson weighed 171 pounds behind a towel, as he was well prepared for the main event in England.

Both co-main event fighters also made weight without incident, as Neil Magny and late notice replacement opponent Craig White came in at 171 pounds.

The only other fighter that failed to make weight was Liverpool native Molly McCann, who was one of the final athletes to step on the scale on Saturday. McCann weighed in just before the 11 a.m. local cutoff time at 127 pounds — one pound over the allotted limit for a non-title flyweight fight.
