While the UFC and McGregor have mended fences after their blow-up over promotional duties, White has had a difficult time working a deal to get Diaz back into the fight. Unsure how the situation with Diaz is going to play out, White on Thursday indicated that they soon would have to move on to another opponent for McGregor’s next fight.
“We’re working on what’s next for him,” White said on SportsCenter. “We’re trying to set up a fight right now. It’s been a little challenging. Obviously, the fight he would love to do is the rematch with Nate Diaz. I’m trying to get the deal done.”
It’s unclear what else the UFC would line up for McGregor. Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar are already slated to fight each other at UFC 200 for the interim version of McGregor’s featherweight title, and McGregor is laser focused on getting the rematch with Diaz at 170 pounds.
“Conor is obsessed with this rematch,” White said. “I don’t know why, but he is. It’s just his type of personality. He’s obsessed with it. He’s obsessed with fighting Diaz again, at 170 pounds.”
Gumming up the works, according to White, is that Diaz wants to blow up the deal he just signed earlier this year. With the Diaz negotiations slowing the process, now the UFC is running out of time to put the fight together for UFC 202 on Aug. 20 as planned.
“Nate, who signed a new deal going into that fight, then, you know, he signed the contract for UFC 200. So Conor doesn’t show up for UFC 200, and now Nate is trying to blow up the deal,” White said on The Herd on Thursday.
“Lorenzo and I have to sit down and try to figure out how to make this deal work. We’ve been going back and forth trying to make this fight happen, but the problem is timing. Now we’re running out of time. This fight is supposed to be Aug. 20. I’ve already got Sept. 20 done. So we’re going to get to a point here where we’re going to run out of time. Just not gonna be able to make the fight.”
Where does the UFC go from here? White believes they are getting to the point where McGregor is going to have to move on to another opponent or his next fight will get pushed to a later date.
“So Conor is either going to have to pick a new opponent or lose that date.”
