Colby Covington may be the most hated fighter on the UFC roster. He talks constant smack about his opponents and disrespects entire nations, but he gets the job done inside the Octagon.
Covington faced former lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos in the UFC 225 co-main event on Saturday with the interim welterweight title on the line. After five rounds of fighting, Covington emerged with the belt and turned his attention toward champion Tyron Woodley.
Covington lived up to his nickname, “Chaos,” by applying relentless pressure. He didn’t give dos Anjos space to work or time to get comfortable. He kept a furious pace but dos Anjos had his moments.
After being takedown down in the opening frame, dos Anjos proved hard to put on his back. When the two were at distance, dos Anjos targeted the body of Covington and delivered leg kicks.
Dos Anjos changed up his strategy heading into the fourth frame. He began to move forward and took Covington down. He secured three takedown during the round and the tide seemingly began to turn.
Covington picked up the pace in the final round. He landed combinations and continued to make dos Anjos fight while moving backward. In the closing seconds of the bout the two stood in front of each other and slugged it out looking to put an exclamation point on the fight. After 25 minutes of fighting, Covington was ruled the winner by unanimous decision. The scorecards read 49-46, 48-47, and 48-47.
“All I want to say is this is the real championship belt. I’m going to do what a real American should do. I’m bringing this belt to the White House and putting it on Donald Trump’s desk,” said Covington following the win.
Champion Woodley has been sidelined with a shoulder injury since July 2017. He and Covington were once training partners at American Top Team. After winning the interim title, Covington taunted Woodley in his post-fight interview.
“Tyron Woodley, you’re a friggen coward. Why did you let this little, filthy animal take this ass whooping tonight? It was supposed to be you,” he said. “You can’t run. You can’t hide anymore Tyron Woodley. I’m coming for you. Like I said, this is the real championship belt.”
“No one can stop my will. No one can go 25 minutes with me in here. Tyron Woodley knows that the last time we trained I melted him. He was done after two rounds. The same thing will happen when I unify my belt,” added the newly crowned interim champion.
