The UFC made its Northern Ireland debut this past weekend in Belfast. Despite a card that seemed lackluster to many going into the event, and the main events lived down to that, many of the fighters on the undercard carried the event on their shoulders. Chief among them were Clay Guida and Tyson Griffin.
The two lightweights battled for the three-round duration of their bout in what MMAWeekly Radio host Damon Martin called “The Fight of the Night.”
Carrying on in the tradition of the Roger Huerta vs. Leonard Garcia fight at UFC 69, Guida and Griffin fought back and forth in a technical bout that saw them move from stand-up to wrestling to submissions. In then end, Griffin walked out of the Octagon with a split decision victory.
EliteXC fighter Joey Villasenor has been on a rollercoaster ride over the past week as he makes final preparations for his fight Friday night as part of the Strikeforce “Shamrock vs. Baroni” event. Having trained for a 5-round EliteXC Middleweight Championship fight against Murilo “Ninja” Rua, Villasenor found out Friday that Ninja failed the required physical and did not receive his license to fight in California.
The promoters scrambled and quickly came up with Falaniko Vitale as a late replacement, although the fight has been relegated to a 3-round non-title bout at 190 pounds.
Both Clay Guida and Tyson Griffin join MMAWeekly Radio TOGETHER tonight to talk about their fight at UFC 72 in Belfast. EliteXC fighter Joey Villasenor also joins the show to talk about his fight Friday night in San Jose, Calif. Listen in live tonight at 6pm PT / 9pm ET when Guida, Griffin and Villasenor join Damon & Jeff on MMAWeekly Radio.
