Invicta FC strawweight champion Carla Esparza was scheduled to face the undefeated Brazilian Claudia Gadelha at Invicta FC 7 on Dec. 7, but Gadelha had to withdraw from the bout the day of the event due to illness.
While the two ladies didn’t go at it in the cage, they later threw down on Twitter.
The exchange began when a fan stated that he thinks Gadelha should fight at 125-pounds and challenge champion Barb Honchak instead of fighting at 115-pounds. Esparza quoted the tweet and stated, “Would b awesome fight.”
Gadelha may have thought the quote was from Esparza and responded.
@CarlaEsparza1 I fought a lot times in 115lb and had no problem. You scared girl?? U Will have to Fight me!! Dont run!!
— Claudia Gadelha (@ClaudiaGadelha_) December 9, 2013
Esparza quickly fired back.
Pshh @ClaudiaGadelha_ You do all the running for both of us. You ran twice already!
— Carla Esparza (@CarlaEsparza1) December 9, 2013
The exchange went on for more than two hours. Esparza’s best friend Felice Herrig joined the conversation.
Carla showed up to fight ! Where were you?! Quit being a bitch! “RT @ClaudiaGadelha_: @CarlaEsparza1 I fought … http://t.co/AdCI5TKaIq
— Felice Herrig (@feliceherrig) December 9, 2013
Esparza and Gadelha have been scheduled to fight twice. They were supposed to fight for the inaugural Invicta FC strawweight title at Invicta FC 4 but Gadelha had to pull out of the fight due to a broken nose. Herring fought on the Invicta FC 7 card, losing to Tecia Torres by unanimous decision. Gadelha responded to Herrig’s comments.
@feliceherrig @CarlaEsparza1 I am sick, shut up loser! Go back to the drawing board!!
— Claudia Gadelha (@ClaudiaGadelha_) December 9, 2013
Esparza fired back.
@ClaudiaGadelha_ @feliceherrig you are worse than a loser, you don’t even show up!!!
— Carla Esparza (@CarlaEsparza1) December 9, 2013
Esparza called out Torres following her win over Herrig at Invicta FC 7 and that didn’t sit well with Gahelha.
@CarlaEsparza1 Calling out a girl with 4 fights. Classy
— Claudia Gadelha (@ClaudiaGadelha_) December 9, 2013
@ClaudiaGadelha_ pshhh yea whatever. You probably won’t even show up. Sick of wasting my time on you!
— Carla Esparza (@CarlaEsparza1) December 9, 2013
Herrig and Esparza suggested that Gadelha wasn’t sick and simply had a bad weight cut.
“@feliceherrig: @CarlaEsparza1 win or lose I show up to fight. And don’t fake injuries or get sick bc I can’t manage my weigh cut” #truth
— Carla Esparza (@CarlaEsparza1) December 9, 2013
Gadelha posted the paperwork from the hospital with her diagnosis and treatment, but Esparza wasn’t buying it.
@CarlaEsparza1 Think whatever you want to. We will settle this in the cage!!!
— Claudia Gadelha (@ClaudiaGadelha_) December 9, 2013
The exchange got so heated that who had the better behinds was brought into the argument.
@CarlaEsparza1 If I knew you were like that I would slap your face before!!
— Claudia Gadelha (@ClaudiaGadelha_) December 9, 2013
The ladies eventually calmed down and moved on, but that likely won’t be the end of the feud. Esparza, Herrig and Gadelha were recently signed to the UFC and will compete on The Ultimate Fighter 20 to crown the inaugural UFC strawweight champion. The three will live under the same roof and potentially have to fight on the show. Should make for some good television.
