Today in Japan, Pride DSE announced that the Bushido series would begin round one of the Welterweight GP on June 4th. Round two would follow on August 26th, and that the Finals would take place on November 5th.

The fighters that have been confirmed to fight in round one are Ryo Chonan, Akihiro Gono, and Makoto Takimoto. Possible participants mentioned where Dan Henderson, Murilo Bustamante, Dennis Kang, Phil Baroni, and Paulo Filho. Ikuhisa Minowa of course was not mentioned due to his participation in the Open Weight GP.

It will be interesting to see whether Dan Henderson, 2005 Welterweight GP champion, will participate or not since he said to the press last week in Japan that he wanted to fight in the Open Weight GP and not the Welterweight GP. Pride President Sakakibara even mentioned after Bushido 10 event that Pride was considering on possibly allowing Henderson to fight in the Open Weight GP.

When MMAWeekly asked Henderson why he wants to fight in the Open Weight GP over the Welterweight GP he said, “I don’t know, some probably say stupidity(smile)…It’s just a bigger challenge and a bigger prize at the end of the line.”

You can see that video interview with Dan Henderson from last week in the Behind The Scenes section of MMAWeekly TV.
