BREAKING: Frank Mir Steps in to Fight Junior dos Santos at UFC 146

Posted on by Ken Pishna

Junior dos Santos and Frank MirWhen it was revealed that Alistair Overeem tested for an elevated ratio of testosterone-to-epitestosterone, almost everyone immediately jumped on the thought that Junior dos Santos would get an opponent change for his May 26 title defense. Almost everyone targeted Frank Mir as the most likely, and most deserving, option.

UFC officials did not make and immediate change, and UFC president Dana White fanned the flames of speculation when he tweeted in response to a fan question on Twitter that Frank Mir would still be fighting Cain Velasquez.

How quickly things change.

Following Friday night’s live fight on The Ultimate Fighter, just before taking off to Atlanta for Saturday night’s UFC 145: Jones vs. Evans, again turned to his favorite social media platform to inform everyone that Overeem has been removed from the UFC 146 title fight with dos Santos.

“Taking off to Atlanta!!!! May 26 th is now Mir vs JDS for the HW title in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand,” tweeted White.

It’s unclear why the change came just days before Overeem was slated to go before the Nevada State Athletic Commission to offer up his reasoning for a T/E ratio of 14-to-1 at a surprise drug screen in March. A normal ratio for most men is 1-to-1, although the NSAC set a ratio of 6-to-1 before an athlete is considered beyond the allowable limit.

The announcement, however, isn’t a good indicator that Overeem is likely to be successful in arguing his case to the NSAC.

With little more than a month to go until UFC 146, company officials have little time left to promote the new title fight, but don’t be surprised if they start at UFC 145 on Saturday night.

There had been no word yet at the time of publication if Cain Velasquez would remain on the card, and if so, who he would fight.

bumbaclaught! Mir has been impressive but JDS is strong. Mir gets knocked out by huge strong dudes. I will have to watch it though.

    • Anthony

True, Mir does have a tendency to get overwelmed by the bigger stronger HVY WTs, but JDS isnt really that big of heavy wt. In fact ,I dont even think he goes 240. Im not positive, but im pretty sure JDS was 239lbs when he beat Cain and won the title. If im wrong, im sure someone will correct me.

  • phrankthetank

About time they made the call. It’s unfair to JDS to have to wait for his opponent. It would be just as unfair for him to fight someone completely hopped up on the juice.

  • RubeKegal

Mir via submission. JDS’s ground game is suspect.

    • Cptmats

Don’t know that there any way Mir would get it to the ground, JDS TDD is excellent and i don’t know that mir could get that close without getting KO’d. JDS’s only loss was to sub but that was a long time ago, I don’t think his ground game is nearly as suspect as Mir’s chin !

  • http://www.bloodyfists.net/forums/index.php SHORT_BUS

Sucks that we won’t get to see Overeem vs. JDS but this was the right move. Even if Overeem was able to tap dance through the commission meeting and get licensed, it would still look bad for the company to have someone with a big dark cloud hovering over him fighting for the belt. Imagine the negative press they’d get if Overeem won and they had a “cheater” as champion.

Wonder what prompted them to make the change now instead of waiting until after the commission meeting on Tuesday like originally planned. Maybe we’ll see Overeem withdraw his license application.

    • phrankthetank

You’re right, it does suck. But this is the right move. I wonder who cain’s gonna match up with now? Werdum perhaps?

    • Anthony

Im thinkin they probably did it early so they could promote the new fight on the Bones vs Evans ppv(the article also made this reference). Its the only way announcing the fight before Overeems hearing with the NAC makes any sence. I guess by announcing it before the hearing they are hoping to establish a lil momentum leading up to UFC 146, Im bummed , I really wanted to see Overeem vs. JDS–I hope Dana doesnt wig out and fire him.

  • millerman1968

JDS By knock out ,Pay back for
    breaking Nogs arm

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=841659762 blackhawaiian

I think people don’t give Mir the respect he deserves, he is a contender. JDS ground game is suspect & Mir beat his coach twice by KO & by sub. Mir’s stand up has come along way, but not enough to take JDS head on but Mir is smarter than that. I take Mir by sub in the second.

    • Lesnardo

      Dude just stop.

Pretty much everyone has a chance. But that chance is very slim.

      JDS destroyed Carwin.

      Mir couldn’t hang with Carwin.

SO IF FRANK MIR DOESN’T WIN, PLEASE DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND GET OUT OF HERE!!!

      • Anthony

I dont get you Lesnardo. You know your MMA as well as anyone on this site ,if not better. I study this stuff inside out(read any bios I can get my hands on and very seldom miss a fight) and I dont think im half as knowledgable as you. That said, 90% of your post involve insults and disrespect to most anyone else that posts anything . WHY? This is a sport built on the premise of honor and respect, and as knowledgable as you are you just dont get MMA. Stop being a d*ck to everyone. If you disagree with what someone says prove them wrong with with facts not insults. Im so sick of a few guys on this site that have low self esteem so they get off leveling insults at anyone who dares to post. Its just not cool.

      • phrankthetank

Once again… That argument isn’t valid. You should know this. I get it, you don’t like Frank Mir.

      • maddawgmar

Again Lesnardo, you show you bias. Guy A beats guy B, and guy B beats guy C, so guy A will beat guy C. Not how fighting works. Ask Joe Frazier. He beat Ali, Ali beat Forman, yet he lost to Forman. The examples are endless. Just cause Mir lost to Carwin and JDS beat him, doesn’t mean JDS will beat Mir. If Mir can get it to the ground it is over, if not JDS has it in the bag. Don’t be surprised either way both are world class fighters.

      • MrAdidas

Hey RETARDO why dont you GTFO of here?! I’m sure many people here would love to see that show … do ur self & especially your parents a HUGE favor and kill ur self!

See, I can be just like RETARDO, insulting people, being ignorant & rude, for NO reason at all. Not sure i’m on board about you knowing your MMA “stuff” either, jsut b/c Mir lost to Carwin & Dos Santos beat Carwin by decision, means absolutely NOTHING! Anyone with less than avg common sense would know that, yet here you are saying different.

What happens if Frank Mir wins? Will you leave 4EVER?!? Mir deserves the title fight over any other HW at this time, but I still see him losing, though I wouldnt be surprised if he did pull off an upset … by Submission & who knows he may even tag Dos Santos, like he did Vs Congo!

        • Anthony

Adidas +1–Lesnardo needs to go–I thought if I complimented the guy he might listen to me but nothing gets through to him–no manners–hes got to be a kid—ill tell ya something else ,TKO and D-rail are cut from the same mold. Theyd rather insult everybody then discuss the sport we love. If you cant be polite then f*ck off and dont bother to post at all. Im so sick of it.

          • XIRandomHeroIX

he’s a trolling little sh*t and if we just ignore him like his parents do then he will find another outlet to pissing someone off

    • andthenisaid

Mir did not break Nog’s arm……pride broke his arm.

      • phrankthetank

Mir broke his arm because he refused to tap, Mir got the submission and put nog in that position. Don’t take it away from him

        • Anthony

Frank, do you know if he eventually did tap just as his arm broke? I didnt see the tap, but have heard a few people claim he did?

  • hartico

Can’t wait to see Mir get his face smashed in….hope they do Fedor vs Cain….f–k off haters…

    • Lesnardo

      Fedor woul seriously get hurt.

JDS/Cain/Overeem is most likely stronger than prime Fedor.

Carwin vs Fedor would have been interesting.

Prime Fedor would have beatn Frank MIr via UD and NOT KO.

      • RubeKegal

Lesnardo, that was one of the most retarded statements I have ever seen saying Prime Fedor beats Mir via UD. Please just cut your fingers off.

        • Anthony

Rube +1–lets run tthis idiot off the site.

          • XIRandomHeroIX

This is the same moron I let have it when this all broke and he refered to Mir as a “Tomato Can”… this kid will seriously say anything just to get a response. If we want him to go away we all need to ignore his post rather than get baited into a flame war with a bored teenager

  • tomkevill

i wonder if overeem will fight cain if hes able to get licenced. fedor is fighting pedro rizzo next so i doubt he would even want to fight someone on the level of valasquez if it was even possible lol

  • D-rail

If your all so confident that Mir will prevail, then place some high bets on him and see what happens.

    • Lesnardo

      Lol.

This board is full of weirdos.

Honestly, Mir has like 10% chance of beating Dos Santos. Yet they still cling on to that chance.

      “JDS’s ground game is suspect.”
Dude, a guy’s ground game is suspect if he has struggled on the ground. No one was able to take JDS down yet. ANd Mir Can’t take him down.

Let’s put it this way. JDS would kill Brock Lesnar. Brock would kill Mir.

      • zacharynothing

        Gonzaga took Junior down.

      • Anthony

“Let’s put it this way. JDS would kill Brock Lesnar. Brock would kill Mir.” —TRUE, but as Joe Rogan says styles make fights. You cant judge it that way. Just because “A” lost to “B” and “C” beat “B” It doesent mean that “C” beating “A” is automatic. If Mir is able to take this to the ground, it will be very interesting, If it it stays a stand up fight Mirs a sitting duck.

        • phrankthetank

I responded to him this exact way in an earlier article. It’s in one ear and out the other. He just wants to shove his opinion down your throat. No respect for what other people think.

          • Anthony

bro , this kids a total ass. Weve put up with his classless insults too long–Lesnardo must go–and anyone else that posts disrespectfull sh#t–this site should be about intelligent discusions on MMA and. I have friends that wont post cuz they dont want to be insulted by a few classless noobs–not cool

          • phrankthetank

Anthony, I agree with you, but if your friends won’t post because they’re afraid of having some douche try to insult them, they need to grow a pair.

        • MrAdidas

AGREED! TY finally someone with common sense b/c RETARDO has none. I was trying to tell him the exact same thing you said. Just b/c Dos Santos beat Carwin & Carwin KO’d Mir, doesnt mean shit all, especially with Mir Vs Dos Santos.

  • mmachoman

Mir’s getting knocked out for sure.

  • lycan

I gotta big feeling that jds is gonna win , I’m still going for mir by sub , most likely gonna be jds by knockout in the first round . And yes Cain vs werdum would be a great fight , let’s see if Dana bulls him out of silva vs sonnen ll , it might not be in brasil anyways , just suspecting that’s a good reason why he’s fighing there , never saw mike russow fight , but werdum should fight a top ten heavyweight like Cain/carwin

    • Anthony

Russow is actually a seriously tuff fighter. Granted ,he hasnt faced top 5 or even top 10 fighters. I think Werdum will be the test to determine if this kids the real deal or just a second tier fighter,

  • matty

Let’s be real. Mir has no chance of beating JDS. Maybe a 5 percent chance. His odds of beating JDS are about the same as Rashad beating Jones. Neither will ever happen. How is Mir even deserving of this title shot? He breaks the arm of a old has been and he gets a title shot? That doesn’t sound right to me. It should of been Cain getting the shot not because his last fight was impressive but because he is the only one on this card that has a chance at beating JDS. If you have any MMA knowledge you would have to agree. Night night Mir in the 1st.

    • phrankthetank

I have plenty of MMA knowledge and I entirely disagree. Cain got knocked out by JDS in a minute. Why should he even be considered for a rematch? Mir is on a 3 fight win streak. While I would admit that neither mir nor Evans is the favourites in their respective fights. I give them both much better than a 5 percent chance of winning.

      • Anthony

im incline to agree ya Frank as I pretty much always do . I guess with Overeem on the shelf(or most he will be after the hearing on the 24th) they really dont have any other fights that makes sense–its a shame.

  • lawrensco

Cain makes no sense either though. I agree that it makes for a better fight, but with all the whining people have been doing about instant rematches lately, this rematch came at a bad time. Either fight really makes sense but because they have to clean up after Overeem, Mir is the guy. F’in Overeem.

    • phrankthetank

You get an instant rematch for a very close fight or a controversial stoppage. You get knocked out in 1 minute you don’t get a rematch. Even GSP didn’t get an immediate rematch with Serra.

      • Anthony

        +1

  • trevor

More Breaking news! Lesnardo swallows more cum than a street whore! I wish I could come to your house with Mir and all the other fighters you bad mouth and they could block the doors so you couldn’t run while we play MMA in your basement!

    • Anthony

+1 ………trevor hit the nail on the head–Lesnardo must go.

  • jro801

I love mir, one of my favorite fighters, but I don’t know if he should have stepped up on this one. He has a good streak going and I think him fight cain and winning would have been a sign he was ready for jds. But just jumping in was a bad call. I just pray to baby jesus that mir can take him down, and quick. Because even though mir is a serious boxer now, he wont last long with those nasty jds hooks. Just my 2 cents.

    • phrankthetank

At this point in mir’s career he needs to be ready to fight anyone. He made the right choice in taking this fight, win or lose.

      • Anthony

agree with ya Frank–hes way too seasoned to try and work his way back up with second tier fighters. At this point in his career hes either champion calaber or its just not in the cards.I dont see him getting too much more well rounded then he is right now–Mir has momentum from his past few fights, and hes in his prime-now or never

        • Anthony

I didnt mean to say Cains a second tier fighter–The guys obviously top 2 or 3–my bad

  • p3ezy

jds wins by (t)ko at 2.46 of rd 1

  • markrenton

It does not matter if JDS beat someone that beat Mir, anything can happen in this sport. We all know that Dos Santos’ standup is on another level from everyone else in the HW division, but you never know. I am a huge JDS fan and expect him to dominate, but Mir has just nasty submissions so you cant count him completely out. I have to believe Mir is going to be looking to pull guard or go after some sort of leg/ankle lock. This fight is not going to go 5 rounds…Im just hoping its more than a 36 second brain punch like the cain fight.

    • Anthony

I agree with everything you said Mark ,BUT I think Overeems stand up is on par with JDS. Thats why it sucks so much losing that fight, not to injury(I could live with that) but to a bad choice by an amazing fighter

  • D-rail

Trevor’s idea of playing MMA in the basement, is getting creampied by all his favorite MMA stars. Mir just dug his own grave, but at this point in his career, what else is left to do but to play gatekeeper. Tisk, Tisk.

    • Anthony

its nice to hear someone make a valid argument instead of just childish insults D-rail–your no better than Lesnardo(this isnt just about this particular post either)–why dont you go disrespect other people on other sites. We wont be needing your “expertise” any longer at this one-please,oh and before you pack your bags and leave us please, sincerly for the bottom of my heart D-rail ,,,,,f#ck off,,,, , and while your at it, why dont you run “D-rail” on your mother,,,,see im capable of being an a$$hole too, and leveling insults with the best of them–I just normally take the higher road and chose not to do so–doesnt feel real good does it D-rail?( before you say it , I already know, you dont care)-Trevor that was for you bro

  • http://www.facebook.com/Gruvalicious Josee Angel

Whatev… Mir will lose and continue to hover in the top ten JDS will defend his title, and yet the judging issues and steroids still plauging the UFC.

  • mradriel1

That sucks I was really hoping to see Mark Hunt in there :(

  • BigDmO

mark hunt vs cain for #1 contender

  • BigDmO

or maybe mark hunt vs john cena

  • millerman1968

JDS is going to do what Mir did to NOG the first time,he,s going to punch Mir in the face and when Mir crumbles to the ground he,s going to go to side mount and hammer fist him tell he submits or the ref stops it.

  • somecokehead

JDS WEIGHS 138 lbs… my bad. This is a good fight for mir. Gotta avoid Juniors power. Do that and he wins. I think this is Mirs last chance at the title. Brock and Carwin were too powerful, Cain beat brock. If you ask me Mir dodged a bullet not fighting Brownpride!

    • Anthony

my bro, for a coke head, you know your MMA my friend…lol –seriously I couldnt agree more

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002259644349 irvingromo

In my opinion, Werdum vs Mir, and Cain vs JDS, would of made a badass UFC 146,,,,mir and werdum both are outstanding with bjj…. I think jds got a lucky shot against cain, cain could of easily beaten jds…..come on guys give credit Mir, he did broke nogs arm

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002259644349 irvingromo

Mir mite not b the best standup fighter,, but his muay thai is solid….Jds couldnt ko roy nelson, Mir vs jds, and cain vs werdum sounds decent..if cain wins and dos santos wins = REMATCH,,if werdum wins and jds win = REMATCH,,,if cain wins and Mir wins= Great fight,,if werdum wins and Mir wins= TWO OF THE BEST BJJ PARACTICIONERS GOING AT IT, that Equals A BADASS FIGHT…EITHER WAY ITS A WIN WUN FOR MMA FANS LIKE ME…if u dnt agree keep ur WORDS SWEET, cuz ill make you Eat them

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002259644349 irvingromo

Thats jst a fantasy though, BIGFOOT SILVA has 0 chance against Cain…if Mir wins and Silva wins, that would b like a vengeful fight for Silva, Big NOG is Silvas Trainer, IM SURE U GUYS KNEW THAT
