While all the focus was on former Pride FC champion Fedor Emelianenko and former UFC champion Frank Mir at Bellator 198 recently, the grappling specialists swooped in and stole much of their thunder. Of course, Fedor and Mir still delivered an exciting 48 seconds… with Fedor knocking Mir out, but it was the submission artists that commanded the spotlight.
There were five fights on the Bellator 198 main card and four of them ended by way of submission.
Conor McGregor’s teammate Dillon Danis opened the show with a somewhat-rare-for-MMA toehold before passing the baton off to the famed Gracie family for a follow-up. After Neiman Gracie landed his arm-triangle choke, fellow BJJ champion Rafael Lovato, Jr. finished UFC veteran Gerald Harris with an armbar.
Not to be outdone by the three opening bout victors, Bellator 198 co-main event winner Emmanuel Sanchez used a standing arm-triangle choke to bring former UFC fighter Sam Sicilia to the canvas before cinching down on the choke and forcing him to tap.
