One day after scoring an important decision victory over Gesias “JZ” Calvancante, MMAWeekly.com No. 3 lightweight fighter Shinya Aoki had his dream squashed. According to a report by Sherdog.com, the lightweight standout suffered a facial injury during the bout and will not be able to compete in the second round of the DREAM Lightweight Grand Prix tournament scheduled for May 11.

Taking his place, in accordance with official DREAM rules, is Calvancante. The promotion’s tournament rules state that if the winning fighter is unable to advance, then the loser, if able, takes his place.

The two fought in the original opening round of the tournament, but the bout ended in a controversial “no contest.” Aoki was unable to continue after what was deemed an illegal blow by Calvancante, thus the rematch on April 29, which Aoki won.

Calvancante will now face Katsuhiko Nagata on May 11.

Attempts to reach Calvancante’s representatives went unanswered at the time of publication.
