Alex Oliveira Taps Out Carlos Condit in Action-Packed Fight (UFC on FOX 29 Results)

April 14, 2018

Former interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit was originally slated to take on Matt Brown on Saturday at UFC on FOX 29 in Glendale, Arizona, but Brown was forced out of the bout due to injury on April 2.  Alex “Cowboy” Oliveira stepped in a replacement and picked up the biggest win of his career.

Oliveira scored a takedown early in the opening frame after a feeling out process. Condit reversed Oliveira and gained top position but Oliveira applied a guillotine choke. Condit escaped the submission attempt and delivered elbows. Oliveira tried to scramble to his feet and Condit used the opportunity to take Oliveira’s back. He worked to secure a rear-naked choke, but the Brazilian fended off the choke and survived the bad position.

Condit came out aggressive in the second round and landed a right hand in the opening seconds. Oliveira tied Condit up and put him on his back. He stood and Condit delivered an up kick and got back to his feet. Oliveira quickly took him down again and delivered elbows opening up a cut on the side of Condit’s head. Condit worked his way back to his feet and took Oliveira down.  He delivered elbows and stood over Oliveira. As Condit was dropping back down into Oliveira’s guard, Oliveira landed and up kick that stunned Condit. Oliveira scrambled and Condit looked to take him down. During the process, Oliveira applied a standing guillotine choke and dropped to the ground to lock it in. Condit fought the submission attempt as long as he could before he was forced to tap out.

“I took this fight.  My uncle is in the hospital.  My aunt just died.  I do this for my family.  I came here and did this for my family,” said Oliveira following the win.

With the win, Oliveira will likely be ranked in the 170-pound rankings on Monday.  For Condit, it was his fourth loss in a row.  He hasn’t had his hand raised inside the Octagon since May 2015.
