The WSOF 20 weigh-ins took place on Thursday, but by the time the fighters hit the scale, one main eventer was already scratched from the card.
Ronny Markes was supposed to face David Branch in Friday night’s main event on NBC Sports, but a severe case of dehydration forced him out of the fight. The two were supposed to compete for a spot opposite Teddy Holder in the light heavyweight tournament final.
That opportunity is now being afforded Jesse McElligott, who replaces Markes. He stepped on the scale on Thursday at 203 pounds, while Branch made weight at 204 pounds, making the revamped main event official.
“Ronny’s condition is an unfortunate situation, but we are glad that his health has improved since the episode he experienced earlier today,” said WSOF President Ray Sefo. “WSOF is committed to the safety of its athletes and, therefore, there is no way that we could allow Ronny to go on and compete despite the turnaround in his condition.”
McElligot was originally slated to face Steve Skrzat, who is now left without an opponent. WSOF officials informed MMAWeekly.com that Skrzat will still be paid his full fight purse.
The night’s co-main event features a lightweight battle between Nick Newell and Joe Condon.
Making their respective WSOF debuts, undefeated Ben Fodor, also known as costumed crime fighter “Phoenix Jones,” and fellow rising star and Iraq war veteran Emmanuel Walo will throw down in a 175-pound catchweight contest.
