World Series of Fighting 4: Spong vs. DeAnda takes place Saturday at Citizens Business Bank Arena. Tyrone Spong vs. Angel DeAnda headlines the card with a supporting cast that includes company president Ray Sefo fighting Dave Huckaba.
First, the fighters had to step on the scale on Friday to weigh-in and make their bouts official.
None of the main card fighters had any issues making weight.
Tryone Spong and Angel DeAnda both hit the mark at 205 pounds for their main event bout.
Spong is one of the best kickboxers in the world, but has very little mixed martial arts experience. That’s something that DeAnda will attempt to exploit.
“I plan on shocking the world tomorrow,” said DeAnda after weighing in. “My hand raised at the end of the fight.”
Spong appeared unconcerned, however, believing his assets outweigh DeAnda’s MMA experience.
“I think I’m a better athlete. We’ll see tomorrow,” said Spong. “He’s going to try to shock the world, so we’ll see.”
Undercard fighter Lew Polley was more than 30 pounds overweight and ruled ineligible, so his bout with Hans Stringer was cancelled before the weigh-in began. There’s a good chance that WSOF officials will release Polley.
Gerald Harris, who squares off with Jorge Santiago in a welterweight preliminary bout, was 1.4 pounds over the 171-pound limit for the fight. He was given two hours to lose the excess weight.
