An injury has forced a change to the UFC 143 card as Mike Stumpf is out, and Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson has been signed as his replacement.

UFC officials announced the move on Tuesday with Thompson now facing former ‘Ultimate Fighter’ competitor Justin Edwards on the Super Bowl weekend card.

First profiled by MMAWeekly.com in Oct 2011, Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson is a life long martial artist who started out as a very successful kickboxer before moving into the world of MMA.

Thompson amassed an incredible 57-0 record as a kickboxer with 40 knockouts to his credit, but a knee injury forced him to the sidelines and that’s where his attention turned to MMA.

His record has remained perfect as a fighter and Thompson has also picked up some training with UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre and his coach Firas Zahabi in Montreal over the last several months.

Thompson was actually brought into their camp in Oct last year as a double to mimic what opponent Carlos Condit was expecting to do in his fight with St-Pierre.

Now Thompson gets his chance on the biggest stage as he makes his UFC debut on Feb 4 in Las Vegas.

This kid is a killer with his stand up!! Not sure about his ground skills or takedown defense but if it stays standing I predict headkick KO!

YES this kid is the REAL DEAL – He and GSP have trained for a while now, I’m not sure where he trains & if he’s interested in figthing full time as a MMArtist, or is he just going to fight once in a while in MMA? I hope he sticks to MMA b/c this guy is incredible to watch. As MMA fanatic said, his stand up/strikes & kicks are 2nd to NOONE, his take down defense is excellent, it would have to be wouldn’t…. training with GSP? I’m not sure where he’s at in regards to grapling/BJJ etc. He’s still very young, this kid could have a very very bright future in MMA/UFC!

I know nothing about this cat, but you two now have me excited to see him fight. Thanks for the info.

  • He actually shredded his knee a few years ago and when he was in the down time he decided to do MMA full time. He’s been at it for a while now, plus he’s been training on and off with GSP over the last year or so. On day one he’s got some of the most legit stand-up in the UFC, and his ground is solid but he’s gotta prove it now.

Real good kid though, great prospect.

  • Wonderboy was terrific in the WCL; I’ve been waiting for this!
