Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson is still set to make his promotional debut at UFC 143 on Super Bowl weekend in Las Vegas, but he’ll now face a fellow newbie instead of UFC veteran Justin Edwards.

With Edwards forced off the card due to undisclosed reasons, Thompson is now set to face Dan Stittgen, MMAWeekly.com confirmed with sources close to the fight. FightCove.com first reported the switch.

Thompson (5-0) makes his way to the cage having fought his way up through various regional promotion in the South, while Stittgen (7-1) has competed primarily on the Midwest circuit. Interestingly enough, Stittgen’s lone loss comes via submission to Edwards.

An interim UFC welterweight championship bout pitting Nick Diaz vs. Carlos Condit headlines UFC 143 on Feb. 4 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.

I don’t know about his ground game but he is a killer on the feet!! I’ve seen him knock multi people out in 1 day in 1 tournament ! Can’t wait to see how he does!

I like this better. I think that UFC should put two newcomers together more often. Kinda like an audition, you win your in. Instead of oh here is this guy. And “this guy” has been in the UFC for a while. Exceptions of course for bigger names like, if Eddie Alvarez, Gil Melendez, or Ben Askren cone in.

P.S. Alvarez v. Melendez would be an awesome fight. Coker, White make it happen.

I’m very impressed with the people who are marketing Stephen. Wish him well
