With Rogerio Nogueira Injured, Chael Sonnen Lobbies for UFC 161 Bout with Shogun Rua

Posted on by MMAWeekly.com Staff

Chael SonnenChael Sonnen has never been one to shy away from poking and prodding his way into a fight, something he’s trying to do again with Antonio Rogerio Nogueira injured and out of his UFC 161 bout with Mauricio “Shogun” Rua.

Sonnen offered his services on last-minute notice when Dan Henderson was injured and fell out of his scheduled UFC 151 bout with Jon Jones. The fight didn’t happen then, but Sonnen was later rewarded for his offer with a coaching slot opposite Jones on season 17 of The Ultimate Fighter and a shot at the champ at UFC 159.

Sonnen lost the bout to Jones, but regardless of the outcome, his stock rose to an all-time high. Love him or hate him, everyone knows the name Chael Sonnen.

After deciding not to retire following the Jones fight, Sonnen tried to goad Wanderlei Silva into a fight, but the Brazilian was slow on the uptake and Sonnen moved on.

With Nogueira withdrawing from the Shogun bout due to reported trouble with his back, Sonnen pounced on the opportunity to throw his name in the mix as a possible replacement. He tweeted a message out to Shogun, noting that he is currently without a fight and available to step in… utilizing his unique vernacular.

UFC 161 is just two weeks away, so timing is critical, and the UFC could find it difficult to line up a suitable replacement outside of Sonnen in time to keep Shogun on the card.

UFC 161 has already suffered from injuries, losing its original main event, an interim bantamweight title fight between Renan Barão and Eddie Wineland.

Rashad Evans and Dan Henderson square off in a three-round light heavyweight fight in the UFC 161 headliner on June 15 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

I like sonnen, but he might be biteing off more than he can chew. I hope he’s been working his leg lock defense if he gets that fight.

    • barnettoo

Yeah…I am not sure at 205 Sonnen can mandle guys like how he used to down at 185. Brian Stann lost to Wanderlei Silva..and Sonnen went three close rounds with Bisping.

Even at this point of his career, Shogun can beat Sonnen

  • james velasquez

    Lool at the tweet.
I am so interested on what is going to happen here…
I want to see TEXEIRA the most.
Shogun and his team already said no once on fighting Glover, apparently cause he was was a newcomer.
    But now he’s a contender.
Imo that would probably be even better fight than Lil Nog.
    SO WHY NOT???

    • Big John

If the fight is in the USA where Shogun cannot juice, Sonnen will destroy him.

      • Carlos

You mean the same USA where Sonnen juices with a prescription? What a moron

    • shakejunt

think glover is recovering from a hand injury

  • robc

Shogun in his prime would have had an easy go. Shogun in his current state will get grounded repeatedly and decisioned by Sonnen. I doubt Sonnen can finish Shogun in only 3 rounds (Shogun took a lot of punishment from Hendo and kept going) but he certainly can take him doubt and beat him up. I wonder if Shogun has the option to withdraw if he does not want to fight Sonnen?

    • coneil5150

Of course he has the option this isn’t ancient Rome. But would you want to listen to Chael Sonnen if you backed away from a fight with him?

He may not be the best fighter in the UFC but man can he trash talk.

      • Phael Sonnen

And you respect that? Chael is a clown and should stay in the analysts booth.

        • coneil5150

Are you kidding, That guy is an animal, but he’s lost to the best. That doesn’t take away from the fact that he is an awesome fighter and a very good analyst. And probably the best promoter of these fights, if not himself.

        • Sir_Roy

Everyone has fighters they don’t particularly like. I get that. And if you take Sonnen’s shenanigans even remotely seriously, I can see how he might have pissed certain people off. Seems to have worked with you because hey, he’s got you talking about him.

But anyone that steps into the Octagon at the highest level of MMA competition (i.e. the UFC), winning far more than he loses (consider his competition) is most definitely not just a “clown”. Did he deserve the title shot with Jones? Yes and no. The “no” side of the equation has been talked about to death. However, he deserved the title shot for stepping up to the plate on short notice, when no one else would, to save a promotion. It was not just running his “mouth” that got him that title shot. Far from it. His loyalty to the company, to the hand that feeds him, pays dividends. That gives a clear and important message to other fighters. It was a smart play by both Sonnen and Dana IMHO.

  • Sir_Roy

Thing is, Sonnen’s a 185 pounder. He’s a very small 205er. Jones drove this very important fact home when he manhandled Chael.

Chael’s ready to retire (just about) and is looking to make a few more paychecks on his way out the door – so win, lose or draw, I think he’s taking these fights like he’s got nothing to lose and another paycheck to gain.

I like Shogun against Sonnen to be blunt. Shogun’s bigger, better striker (considerably) and his BJJ would be dangerous for Chael should he get taken down. I definitely think Shogun takes this one.

    • juan

shogun in his younger days would have easily beaten him … but today I see Chael having a slight edge… considering all the wear and tear Shogun has.

      • barnettoo

I disagree. At 205, even with the wear and tear, Shogun should beat Sonnen.

        • shakejunt

we’ll see how much gas he has after round 1. remember, he made BRANDON VERA look like he actually belonged in there.

          • Sir_Roy

Well, I’m assuming Shogun comes in with a full gas tank. Hopefully Forrest taught him a valuable lesson that still holds. But yeah, should he be out of shape then he’ll have a very bad day indeed. Just as any fighter silly enough to step into the Octagon with sub par cardio would in this day and age.

          • Maddawgmar

I agree, except for the Vera part. That was the best Vera I have seen since his HW days. Give Vera a little credit. That being said Rua’s gas tank has alway been in question. It’s like BJ Penn. Sonnen’s wrestling could test that tank.

          • shakejunt

vera did look more inspired there, but he basically was just waiting to get finished the entire fight. rua had him hurt so many times prior to round 4 and was too gassed to pull the trigger.

    • Baller31

Jones is a huge 205 pounder…and he has dominated everyone. Sonnen is an average 205 pounder..I can see him beating Shogun up for 5 rounds…or maybe getting subbed.

      • Phael Sonnen

Sonnen is at the bottom of the barrel at 205, when was the last time he won a fight in that division?

        • Baller31

he has had one fight there in the UFC….

          • Phael Sonnen

Actually he fought there for most of his career and back in 2005 in the UFC.

          • Baller31

            ok..one fight in the past 8 years…

      • Sir_Roy

Sonnen’s an average 185 pounder actually. So yeah, Jones dwarfs him at 205. Point is, Shogun’s bigger than Sonnen and Chael wouldn’t be able to do more than “possibly” hold him down. Henderson’s power couldn’t KO Shogun and his wrestling couldn’t overpower him for long either. I really don’t see Chael doing better in either area.

        • Baller31

He’s huge for 185…walking around at 220….and according to Mike Dolce Sonnen is walking around at 240 now…which would make him bigger than Rua

          • Sir_Roy

            Hm. I stand corrected.

          • Baller31

And if Dolce can be believed, I want to hire him as my trainer!

  • romulo diego

If there is something that really take the tears out of me is to see sonnen and his relentless pursuit to get beaten by Brazilians …. And as a Brazilian myself, I would like to see shogun crack his ugly face …. ;)

    • Milosc

Good idea all around. Feed him to Shogun!

    • David

Shogun is no longer Shogun. He’s turned into a big fat cow that everybody pummels on their way up. I admire Brazilian fighters for their spirit and skill, but Sonnen will outwrestle Shogun and destroy him once they’re on the ground.

  • http://www.CombatScienceMMA.com/ CombatScienceMMA

Say what you want about the guy but the fact the he’s willing to step up says a lot about his work ethic and his dedication to the company he works for. At this point who cares if anyone thinks he deserves it or doesn’t like it, unless they are going to reschedule the match altogether let Sonnen take the fight.

  • Milos Rackovic

I wanna see shogun beat sonnen up first then texeira is good

    • shakejunt

that would be quite the career turnaround

  • Dufus

I hope Chael beats Hua !!

  • Ashley Rodriguez

I would have much rather saw w. silva than Rua, but this fight will make 161 stacked! All for it!

    • Baller31

I agree..but this fight is still an improvement from Rua/Nogueira 2 and no one can hype a fight like Chael

  • justblaze

    Mousasi would be good

  • julian moran

Shogun with a good training camp beats Sonnen easy.
Let’s not forget that Shogun trained for a pacing boxer with good jiu-jitsu, while Sonnen is an aggressive wrestler. Shogun would need a lot of adjustments to his game plan/training camp.

    • Baller31

I don’t think in his prime with his best training camp ever Rua beats Sonnen easy. Sonnen has faced much better strikers (AS), and has a granite chin. I think he can take Rua down all day long and g&p…the only question mark is Sonnen’s submission defense against Rua. I think a fight against Teixeira still makes more sense…and would show if Rua still has another run at the title in him.

      • julian moran

Shogun has better take down defense then Anderson, is aggressive from the bottom and is good at getting back up. He is also stronger then AS, which should also play a factor.

        • Baller31

I agree with all of that…but he will still get taken down.

  • Cereal Killer

Love this fight! Make it happen! Chael just lost 2 in a row, but those were the 2 best champs of all MMA history.(argue if you want) Shogun is 5-5 since joining the UFC, and out of those 5 Machida is the only quality win. I’ll still take Chael on 2 weeks notice.

  • Baller31

I love that Chael will fight anyone anytime. How many fighters will do that? The list of fighters that have turned down fights include Jones, GSP, Shogun, Machida, Anderson Silva and many others. Only a few fighters still have that throwdown mentality, and I get so sick of their excuses why they won’t fight. Chael is a huge 185 pounder, and an average 205 pounder. He has a granite chin and great takedowns. I think he beats up Rua for 5 rounds and gets a decision…or he gets submitted.

    • gnodeb

But he is not fighting anyone anytime… If he stayed in MW like a gate kipper, being a stepping stone for young unknown fighters… that would be something.
Like this, he is just comedian who talk too much and sell tickets like hot cakes. But that is all. In cage he don’t deliver. He is L&P fighter with bad record. How can you compare JJ, GSP or AS to Sonnen? What impress you more? Fighter who CLEAN his division and keep title for few years or comedian who use insults to get a spotlight and do nothing with it?

      • Baller31

Um…do you even watch MMA?? Gatekeeper?? He cleaned out the MW division…check your facts. He lost two in a row…to the two best fighters IN THE WORLD! What impresses me is a fighter who isn’t just trying to pad his resume and stay perfect, but who will throwdown with whomever they ask him to. I like fighters who want to fight the best in the world…not just the easiest matchup.

        • Phael Sonnen

Throw anyone into fighting Jones and Silva without earning a shot and you can say the same thing that “they’ve only lost to the 2 best fighters” in the world. Chael cleaned out the mw division? Your kidding me right? Put him against another wrestler and the guy gets destroyed.

          • Baller31

You’re kidding me right??? He beat Bisping, Marquardt, Okami (one of the best wrestlers in the division, who beat Munoz), Stann…the only title fight he didn’t deserve was against Jones…he more than earned his shots against AS…and what wrestler (other than Jones) has ever had any success against him??

          • Phael Sonnen

Chael has never faced another wrestler other than Jones. Yushin is a great grappler, however he is not a wrestler. He beat two welterweights in Miller (who is barely a gatekeeper) and Marquardt, a guy with very little grappling skill in Stann and just grazed by Bisping. All great match ups for Chael. Put him against Weidman (one of the only other wrestlers in the mw division) and he would have been clowned.

          • Baller31

Okami is a wrestler…and a very good one. He uses wrestling in all of his matches..just because he didn’t compete in wrestling in college does not make him less of a wrestler…just ask GSP…who is also “not a wrestler”..
but I have to agree that Weidman is an amazing wrestler and would beat Sonnen in every aspect of mma

          • Baller31

on a side note…who’s your pick for the AS/Weidman bout?

          • Phael Sonnen

This should be Silva’s toughest test style wise and that Weidman is 10x the fighter that Sonnen is. I think Weidman has a good chance but right now I’m going with Silva, he’s just too good of a finisher where if he finds that one opening he could end the fight.

          • Baller31

I agree that Silva will get tested…very excited for this fight. If Silva wins maybe we get a superfight…if he loses we get a new MW champion.

        • gnodeb

I think that is more important who and how you won then who you lost to. Especially if we know that trash talk is your way to big fights.
He is far from cleaning division. AS, GSP, JJ cleaned divisions. Is it possible you don’t see the difference?
These are the fighters who fight anybody… even him…

          • Baller31

No, those fighters you mention pick and choose their fights..and yes, i stand by the fact that he cleaned the MW division and was number 2 in that division until he moved up a weight class…if you’re saying he didn’t, then i could say neither has GSP (hasn’t beat Hendricks, Kampman, Maia, Ellenberger…or Jones…(hasnt beat Henderson, Gustaffson)…and i agree he totally trash talked his way into the Jones fight…and got an ass whooping for it.

    • Ronal WacDonald

Sonnen is Garbage. Of course he will accept any fight because he is desperate to get a title belt. He has already struck out so many times so why should Dana keep putting him back in the ring? Right now he is relying on luck because his skill just isn’t cutting it anymore. He may have been a decent fighter at one time, but now he is just looking for that lucky win that can get him a belt.

      • Baller31

Again…he lost to the two best fighters in the world…after beating up everyone else in his division…and have you considered he fights because he loves to fight?

        • barnettoo

dude, you sound like a UFC noob that first heard of Chael in the last 4 years.

Chael was never good at 205. So he moved down to 185 where he has had some success.

But had he not thrown those antics, I doubt people would be talking about him.

He lost to Anderson twice. And was destroyed by Jones. Also, he wasn’t beating up everyone before those fights. He was beating people by UD.

          • Baller31

you like to use that word a lot..always spelled wrong…and your arguments are always ignorant…you do know that it had been 8 years…before Jones…since Sonnen fought at LH? And that he had a 14-7 record at that point? Seems you only know very recent history…who’s the newb now??

  • JDMMA

It’d be an EASY win for Shogun, let Chael take one for the team

    • barnettoo

disagree. In light of Shogun’s recent performances against Hendo and Gustafson, there is a huge question mark next to his name as this point.

I am not saying that Chael will beat Shogun, I think Shogun takes this, but I am somewhat hesitant to bet 100% on Shogun.

  • tipsyhippy

Man this guy must hate winning fights. Repsect for him always ready to fight though.

  • Phael Sonnen

Biggest w**** in the business. Willing to do anything to make a buck. Trying to become Dana’s #1 ho over Ronda.

    • Sir_Roy

He knows how to be successful … and he is successful. He’s smart. And it sounds like someone’s a little jealous. Lol.

Not sure what makes you think you have the right to call a man who’s survived 4 rounds in a cage with Anderson Silva a w****. What have you done exactly? What has Sonnen done to brand him a w**** pray tell?

Smart people learn quickly, that to get ahead you have to learn to play by the rules and use your head. If you want to color outside the lines, it needs to be on your terms and it needs to be premeditated and calculated – not simply react emotionally and irrationally and act out as many fighters do, as though the world owes them everything. “But they’re giving it to the man, man”. Right. See how far that takes them in life. Sonnen is right at home in business politics. Good for him.

  • Ashley Rodriguez

I agree that I enjoy watching chael sonnen and his hilarious antics, but if he stops winning fights he should just become a full time commentator. Jon jones proved sonnen is nowhere near the top dogs at 205. Sonnen spent too much time putting on make up for ufc tonight than planning a strategy to at least not get embarrassed by bones.

    • Baller31

Jones proved that Sonnen is nowhere near Jones’ level…it remains to be seen if Chael is among the top dogs at 205….no one Jones has fought has given him much of a challenge as of yet.

  • ryan rasheed

chael will take this…he doesnt need to stand up with shogun and thats where he wins the fight!
