Will Nick Diaz Return to Fighting? UFC Boss Says He Has a Home If He Wants One

Nick Diaz‘s day on Thursday didn’t go very well, but at least he had some back up in the form of UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta.

Following a positive drug test for marijuana for his fight with Carlos Condit at UFC 143, Diaz faces disciplinary action from the Nevada State Athletic Commission that will end with a suspension and a fine.

While no suspension has been handed down yet, past repeat offenders in Nevada for similar occurrences have landed a one year suspension.

Diaz has yet to make a statement since the news was released on Thursday that he tested positive, and he stated during his post fight interview with Joe Rogan that he may very well just walk away from the sport all together.

Well, if he wants a job, the UFC appears more than happy to keep him on the payroll.

UFC co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta during a fan Q&A session on Twitter late Thursday night admitted he liked Diaz because he’s a ‘real fighter’ and stated he has a home with the UFC if he wants one.

“(I) really like the kid,” wrote Fertitta. “Just needs to get it together. I’m a sap for real fighters.”

When asked how he felt about Diaz testing positive for marijuana, Fertitta’s response was quick, but to the point.

“He will be back,” said Fertitta.

Now the question remains will Diaz want to return to the UFC or any form of MMA in the future?

I know he’ll be back. He’ll make a good run and get that belt. Belt or not he will come back and defeat Condit, it will be a huge rematch. It will probably be his first fight when/if he comes back. St. Pierre will probably only have fought once and will probably still be the champ. Diaz will then fight for gold and if he wins I believe he’ll be champ for a good run. If he fails to get gold his first attempt it will probably be end of story for him. I just really hope he comes back. Love him or hate him he is a fighter, he is fun to watch, always saying/doing funny and entertaining shit and he is one of the leet fighters on the MMA scene right now.

  • captainweeble

Nick Diaz is a bad ass!! I hope he takes some time and gets his demons under control and comes back and kicks some more ass! I honestly don’t see what’s not to like about him or his brother. They don’t sugar coat anything! They say it the way it needs to be said. That my friends, is what a true fighter is!!! Go get em Nick!!

  • emmettbarnacle

Lorenzo’s the man and so is nick diaz come on NSAC it’s weed it might as well be legal and come on everyone smokes it. quit your bitchin

  • shereko

Get off this clowns **** already, he started a fight with Joe Riggs in a hospital, he jumped in the brawl on CBS with Mayhem, He didn’t show for press conferences and was pulled vs. GSP, he now tests positive for weed, the guy missed scheduled flights… wth, he can because he has an emotional disorder? So that Corky from Life Goes On can come out and do whatever he wants and people will bow to his retard ass.

Ohh everyones doing it, so just let him… wtf, thats just as retarded. Yes, everyone does, but its also tested for too. I don’t care if they test for Skittles and M&Ms point is you can’t do that pre-fight. If he can’t stop using for 4 weeks, then he has a problem. I don’t care if he was drunk during the fight its not allowed. You people just condone whatever this loser wants to do. LOL Friggin hilarious how naive retards are.

    • KBEsq

Yeah, I probably wouldn’t put it so harshly, but I kind of agree. It takes discipline to be in the UFC, and that discipline goes beyond just training every day. You need to be able to put vices to the side, and Diaz clearly cannot do that.

People say weed is no big deal, which I agree with if it’s once in a while (I personally hate weed), but I know too many people who absolutely cannot function socially without it, and get very anxious without it. That anxiousness is worsened by smoking – it’s like ANY drug in that sense no matter what people say.

Like steroids, the reason Diaz probably needs weed to cope with social anxiety is probably because he’s done so much of it in the past.

    • I agree in terms of the lack of professionalism. Which is to say other fighters have done things like not make weight, and they are vilified as unprofessional, disrespectful clowns who shouldn’t be fighting. Some very dynamic fighters can be put in that category.

Meanwhile a guy like Marquardt is “disgusting”, and gets banned forever even though his offense is overturned but someone who has made the UFC look foolish and have to unannounce two fights because of his decisions is given a pass. He sells, just say it. That’s why.

      • It has nothing to do with his emotional disorder. Karo Parisyan went through the exact same thing and performed almost the exact same actions and Dana White crucified him.

      • rodfells

I agree 100% Joe. Nate M. should be back also. See ya in “Hot lanta” For 145!! Rodfather out.

    • RubeKegal

shereko, that is the post of the year! You are incredibly correct and although I dislike Diaz, I do enjoy watching his fights, but you are completely right. Enough is enough. He is like the Scott Hall of MMA. The WWE funded multiple rehabs for Scott Hall upwards in the 6 figures. How many chances can one guy get? I’m not a world class fighter but ****, if you told me you’d give me $200,000 dollars and the medical bills I would accumulate will be covered, I’ll go in throwing haymakers against Alistair ****ing Overeem.

If I was getting paid $200,000 a fight, I sure as hell wouldn’t do anything to jeopardize it either. Nick Diaz is a great fighter, but not a good role model, not a good ambassador for the sport, and quite frankly not a good person. The UFC is the poster child for being hypocrites though. What Diaz is getting away with, I don’t know any other fighter who would.

Forrest Griffin said “Rape is the new missinary position” and Dana White said he thought it was funny and Miguel Torres made a comment saying “They shouldn’t call it a rape van, they should call it a Happy Van” and Dana fired him for being innapropriate. Rashad Evans told Phil Davis he was gonna put his hands on him more than Sandusky touched those kids, and Rashad is in the clear, AND THAT WAS ON FOX!!

I am really starting to hate the UFC and a lot of people I know are getting the same vibe.

  • bajafox

I’m glad Lorenzo has Diaz’ back and to call him a ‘real fighter’ is nothing but the truth.

Gonna go home and pack a fat bowl with some kief to top it in honor of Lorenzo, haha

  • Towers66

“LOL friggin hilarious how naive retards are.”
    – Shereko

Words of wisdom. Hahaha. Lorenzo and Dana have his back as well as 400,000 ppv buying fans, plus he just made over 800,000 dollars. So for what an idiotic, retarded, thuggish, pot smoking, **** talking, slap fist fighting, nor cal turd that all the haters are calling him, I think he’s got his head on straight. Not to mention one of the best boxers in MMA and a world class jitsu fighter. So if your not on his nuts….. Might as well hop on because you going to be first in line to watch his next fight. Well, if you like watching MMA at it’s best that is. 😉

  • fsunoles09

as a fan of diaz its good to hear their soft stance, besides dana and the ufc knew what they were gettin when they signed em in terms of weed and all that.

  • RonnieV

Diaz fills seats & sells PPV’s! Outside of GSP, no other welterweight generates the interest that Diaz does. Diaz haters even buy fights just to see him lose (which he rarely does). He’s unique, and doesn’t fit the mold of many cookie cutter fighters in the UFC. His fights are always exciting and he has an unorthodox style. Fertitia Bros & Dana White know Nick is not a cheater, and they know they can make a lot of money off his fights.

  • trevor

Diaz is such a moron! I hope he is saving his money because he is gonna need it for the second and third half of his **** life. At least I know who I can hire to landscape my backyard in 5 years. All you clowns who applaud his weed smoking and believe he beat Condit should get a friggin grip! He lost a close fight -the end. Weed is fun but a banned substance in his sport, play by the rules or get burned. This is the prime of Nick’s fighting and money making life and unfortunately he has not realized that get 200grand plus sponsorships etc etc. are not enough. Cutting lawns @ 35 years of age for 10 bucks is gonna blow!

  • Anthony

you guys arent seeing the poitive side of this.Rumor has it Diaz has signed a very lucritive movie contract: Coming this summer to a theater near you” Nick and Chongs My career has gone UP IN SMOKE”

    • RonnieV

      Nyuck Nyuck!

  • D-rail

Some clowns just aren’t funny. Anyway, Fertitta said it, like it or not, that’s a “fighter” u Condit jock straps! Diaz is the man, enough said. Hate all u want, while Lorenzo, Nick, Rogan & Dana bogart da sticky icky & laugh at your Condit wet t- shirts.

  • Anthony

yah, but your hilarious D-rail–I never realized it was possible to have your head that far up another mans a$$–seriously, nice job!

  • oxygendrunkard

Guy used an NSAC banned substance… an idiot. Also ND probably has a bf% of 8%. Marijuana Metabolites store in fat and with that low of bf means that they linger less in the system. So its fair to assume he was smokin’ good within 30 days and less of the fight. If so a total dumbass, and considering he’s a elite fighter in the biggest best promotion in the world you’d think he be more on it. Secondly as an ex pro athlete myself these careers are like an hour glass. A limited run. Only reason he’s getting his balls licked is he’s pulling 400k PPV’s vs projected 250k PPV’s. Dude better get his shvt together because he keeps giving away money in fines and cut purses for being a dummy.

Cesar Gracie also should rep his athlete better and learn better PR skills. The best fighters win with humility and lose with it. You hand the decision to the judges and its close shouldnt trip on the loss, and definitley winge about it feigning retirement etc… I love Diaz as a fighter but some maturity would be good, nothing worse then seeing a fighter like him act like the bitch

    • RonnieV

“He was surprised he tested positive. He does the same ritual every fight for the last five years. He stops it in time and he cleanses his system, works out like crazy, drinks a lot of water and purges his system of it.” – Nick Diaz trainer Cesar Gracie

  • MuayThaiFood

Not defending Nick Diaz or Marijuana here but just an observation. Why does the athletic commission even care? It’s not like Nick Diaz is flying a commercial airliner. Is anyone going to get hurt by his actions besides him? Is it the athletic commission’s job to rid society of drug users? If marijuana is performance enhancing then that’s one thing but if anything it’s the opposite. Jaywalking while smoking cigarettes is illegal and bad for you at the same time but is it relevant to fighting? Well I think smoking a joint two weeks before a fight is just about as relevant. Do random testing for steroids if you want to clean up the the sport and even the playing field.

  • I’ve liked Nick Diaz ever since the fight where he knocked out Robbie Lawler, at one point Lawler tried complaining about a supposed low blow, u could see automatically that Nick Diaz called bull shit on him and just kept fighting. Went on to ko him and have the same no bull shit attitude in the rest of his fights.. I wish he wouldn’t quit, he’s a great fighter. When his brother joined I was like holy shit theres two! Diaz brothers kick ass and take names in a no bull shit manner and don’t look back. Keep Fighting Nick, Ur An Inspiration To Us All. One Day I’ll Fight Too.

  • They care because it is a substantial pain killer. Gomi Broke both of Diaz’s orbital bones and he just kept coming forward until Gomi was tired from punching him. Which leads to another reason why the NSAC cares, it causes an increase in the amount of glycogen (blood sugar) your body burns. Resulting in higher energy rate. Also it is an illegal narcotic in the state of Nevada. Diaz is a joke. He got busted in Nevada for weed previously (Pride 33). I dont care if you think pot is ok or not if you have had a win over turned do to a positive test for any particular substance you shouldnt use it be for a fight. Diaz is a retard and so are his testicle hugging fan boys. And just to point out something, nobody Criticized Randy Couture when he didnt stand in front of James Toney and trade punches. So why do all of the Diaz fan boys criticize Condit for not standing in the pocket and trading with Nick? Oh wait, I know why, becaus the are nut hugging retards.

    • RonnieV

You are clueless dude if you think marijauna is a painkiller for any fighter, if he did smoke weed right before fights it would definitely hurt his performance. Glad you brought up the Gomi fight though, even with the no-contest it was easily the fight of the year in 2007. I guess I’m a nut hugging retard though, what do I know. I’m willing to bet most of you haters would try to shake Nick’s hand if you met him.

    • MuayThaiFood

“What are some of the immediate effects of smoking marijuana?
Most users who smoke marijuana experience an increase in heart rate, reddening of the eyes and dryness in the mouth and throat. Studies of marijuana’s mental effects reveal that it temporarily impairs short-term memory, alters the user’s sense of time and reduces the ability to perform tasks requiring concentration, quick reaction time and coordination. Many believe that hearing, vision and skin sensitivity are enhanced by the drug, although this is not confirmed by objective research. Feelings of euphoria, relaxation, altered sense of body image and bouts of exaggerated laughter are also commonly reported.”

Please give up that really ignorant argument you just made. You are actually suggesting he may have smoked out right before he got in the ring? Really? He more likely smoked it while he was still in Stockton and therefore broke no Nevada laws either.

  • opposition13

What a freaking sore looser, if he wanted to win he should have finished. And he didnt finished because he could not execute his ways……..Its almost like a baby girl. Hey NICK: “ITS YOUR PARTY AND YOU CAN CRY IF YOU WANT TO”! CRY B!TCH CRY!!!!!!

  • alhmiel

throw Diaz away he is a waste of good air. a hopeless cause and a demon.

    • RonnieV

Gotta watch out for those demons…lol

  • alhmiel

Dana White make a statement grow a pair and ban Diaz for life. The UFC is bigger than Nick Nobody Diaz. Don’t let your pride go up in smoke Dana? Flush Diaz and gain some respect and dignity. stop being a mouse Dana and bowing to Nicky narcotic. time to wipe and Flush Diaz away.

  • TandmWarElephant

I don’t think he should quit by any means, he beat bj penn then lost to condit… and the conduit fight was close (although i DO agree with the decision). He is a douche, but i mean I’m a total bisping fan so i don’t care about fighters’ personalities. Diaz is a sick fighter who always makes for a good fight, i don’t like his taunting at all its dumb but when he actually fights it’s a good fight. like the Daley fight that was super good back and forth.

  • hey ronniev,

    The following is from Livestrong.com

Marijuana is used in patients with chronic pain. Multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and arthritis are just a few conditions that can cause unbearable pain. According to the National Pain Foundation, numerous studies have now established that cannabinoids help lessen pain and affect a wide range of symptoms and bodily functions. THC is just one of the cannabinoids found in marijuana.

Diaz is a loser. But just keep huggin his nuts, retard.

    • MuayThaiFood

I don’t even like Nick Diaz but your argument weaker than weak. Yes it’s a painkiller but only while the high lasts. The problem is that while the high lasts you have these effects too:

Most users who smoke marijuana experience an increase in heart rate, reddening of the eyes and dryness in the mouth and throat. Studies of marijuana’s mental effects reveal that it temporarily impairs short-term memory, alters the user’s sense of time and reduces the ability to perform tasks requiring concentration, quick reaction time and coordination. Many believe that hearing, vision and skin sensitivity are enhanced by the drug, although this is not confirmed by objective research. Feelings of euphoria, relaxation, altered sense of body image and bouts of exaggerated laughter are also commonly reported.

Hmm…You don’t think slow reaction time and poor coordination are going to be a problem in a fight? And I didn’t see any euphoria on his face when the winner was announced. Not even Nick Diaz is dumb enough to smoke out right before he steps in the ring because he does it hurts his performance. Unless you think performance enhancement just means getting beat senseless without pain.

      • RonnieV

Quote from Cesar Gracie “He was surprised he tested positive. He does the same ritual every fight for the last five years. He stops it in time and he cleanses his system, works out like crazy, drinks a lot of water and purges his system of it.”

    • fsunoles09

i can go ahead and tell u from personal expirence on multiple occasions that if you get punched in the face while your blowed that ***** still gonna hurt bubba, i used to smoke and then go box and not tryin to brag but i rarely got hit but when i did it felt like any other time bro.and if somebodys a nut hugger cuz they r a fan of somebody then the same can be said about u and anybody u root for condit nuthugger.

  • Go Falcons

Migeul Torres gets fired for a tweet and this ass Diaz can’t get fired for all the stupid things he does….smh

  • If marijuana only had all these negative effects Diaz wouldnt be able to fight. He doesnt carry enough boddy fat to store the THC from use weeks before the fight. In fact the Levels in his system form the Gomi fight were so high that he would have had to have been using marijuanna immediatly before the fight. He knew it was a banned substance and chose to use it anyway. the fact that people will try to defend the use of a substance is rediculous. it is his second time being caught, i hope he gets a full year suspension so i dont have to see all the Diaz fans and pot heads constantly saying stupid things on the message boards for a while.

    • RonnieV

Willie, get your facts straight, it’s his third time getting caught. Would like to see your reference/source on his high Maui Waui intake for the Gomi fight. I call BS on that.

  • alhmiel

If there are rules obey them. Only dopes take Dope. Life is a series of choices each person gets to make their own choices. Nick “Dope” Diaz chooses the path straight to hell. It’s his choice.

    • fsunoles09

you sound like one of them super brainwashed extremist muslims, how bout you stfu and stop acting like you make the choice on judgement day jackass.

Nick Diaz is a chicken ****. He talks alot of **** about how he is going to beat down GSP. He had a shot to do that and he didnt show up to the press confrences so he got booted. Now he smokes weed before a fight he could win knowing that he would get suspended so the fight with GSP would still be off. Purely a ****ing Coward!!!!! How do u sabatoge yourself then bitch about it?

Cause he knows GPS would whoop that ass!

    • RonnieV

I hope the GPS navigational system doesn’t kick his ass (that would mean he crashed his car, right?). You are right Bro, Diaz planned to get suspended and to lose 20% of his fight purse, ans possibly $3 Million this year. Makes total sense! The things you learn on MMA chatboards.

      • shereko

HAHAHA Now thats funny sh*t RonnieV! HAHAHA.
