There’s never much rest for a champion and even after a historic night where the UFC debuted on Fox and Junior dos Santos captured the UFC heavyweight title, everyone is already talking about what’s next.
The main event fight at UFC 141 between former heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar and former Strikeforce and K-1 champion Alistair Overeem will determine the first challenger to dos Santos’ newly won belt.
It didn’t take long however for dos Santos’ next opponent to come up, and the fight will go down in just about six weeks on Dec 30 in Las Vegas.
Does the new UFC heavyweight champion have a preference between Lesnar or Overeem for who he’d rather fight?
“No, I don’t have a preference. Actually, I never choose any opponent, it doesn’t matter who’s going to be my next opponent,” dos Santos said.
“For sure, I’ll be watching this fight and pay attention on everything.”
While he didn’t sound absolutely certain in his fight pick, when asked who he would pick to win the fight between Lesnar and Overeem, he leaned towards his fellow former ‘Ultimate Fighter’ coach.
“I don’t know, I’ll go with Brock (Lesnar),” said dos Santos.
With the fight between Lesnar and Overeem still well over a month away, dos Santos is looking forward to some much needed time off to heal up injuries, including a tear in his knee that almost kept him out of his fight with Cain Velasquez.
Besides that, the new champion is very much looking forward to a party in his native Brazil.
“I’m not thinking about that now,” dos Santos said about his next opponent. “I want to go back to Brazil and make a big, big barbecue for all my family and my partners.”
Enjoy the barbecue, Junior, you’ve earned it.
