The fighters for Thursday’s WEC 53: Henderson vs. Pettis, the final WEC event before it merges into the UFC, weighed in Wednesday at the Jobbing.com Arena in Glendale, Ariz.
WEC lightweight champion Ben Henderson faces Anthony Pettis in the main event to declare the final WEC 155-pound titleholder. Bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz attempts to defend his belt against Scott Jorgensen in the co-main event to become the first UFC bantamweight champ.
Every fighter on the card easily made weight on Thursday.
Not only are Henderson and Pettis fighting for the final WEC lightweight championship, the winner also gets a shot at the winner of the upcoming UFC title fight between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard.
For now, Henderson is focused on the crowd in the state where he lives. “It’s an honor for me guys to fight in front of Glendale, Ariz.,” he said after weighing in.
Pettis showed a lot of respect for Henderson after weighing in, knowing there is a tough task before him, “Ben’s a great fighter, he’s the champ for a reason. I just have to be better than him.”
Cruz and Jorgensen are in much the same boat, with the exception that the winner of their fight not only earns the final WEC bantamweight championship belt, but also the first-ever UFC bantamweight strap.
Jorgensen seemed rather nervous after he made weight, although he said, “I just want to have fun, and I’m doing a very good job at it. I wouldn’t want to be any other place in the world.”
Neither would current champion Dominick Cruz, “I have all the confidence in the world that I’m gonna go in there and smash somebody.”
WEC 53 marks the final World Extreme Cagefighting event. It takes place Thursday night at the Jobbing.com Arena in Glendale, and airs live on the Versus network.
