The weigh-ins for WEC 51 took place on Wednesday afternoon in Colorado. WEC featherweight champion Jose Aldo and challenger Manny Gamburyan were both on weight, making their Thursday night title fight at the 1stBank Center in Broomfield official.
Both fighters tipped the scales at 145 pounds, and while both were short on words following the staredown, each looked ready for action.
“I’m ready, trained hard, I can’t wait to take that belt,” Gamburyan said.
Aldo will be making his second title defense since defeating Mike Brown for the belt. He’ll look to establish his place as not only the best featherweight in the world, but arguably one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in MMA.
“I trained on top of my tactics, so I’m going to put my game into place,” Aldo commented.
The other marquee match-up on the card pits former WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner in a rematch against Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone. This could be one of the nastiest grudges in recent MMA history.
The two lightweights stared each other down after weighing in. The jaw jacking began immediately as Varner and Cerrone came nose to nose before WEC General Manager Reed Harris had to step in to separate them.
“Last time it was a great fight. Donald’s a tough dude. I’m not going to take anything away from him. Tomorrow night, the score will get settled,” said Varner emphatically.
Excitement was the only color washing over Cerrone’s face as he hopes to erase the memory of the 2009 fight he had with Varner and get back on the winning track at the same time.
“My knees are clucking like a schoolgirl right now. I’m ready, I’m excited, I can’t wait for tomorrow,” Cerrone answered back.
