SACRAMENTO, Calif. – World Extreme Cagefighting has returned with WEC 46: Varner vs. Henderson for another turn at the ARCO Arena on Sunday night. Saturday afternoon, the fighters stepped on the scales, making all ten bouts official.

WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner returns after a year of inactivity due to injury to unify his belt with the interim title held by Ben Henderson. Both stripped down and weighed in behind a towel, Varner tipping the scale at 155 pounds and Henderson at 154.5.

Relaying that his health is “100-percent,” Varner told a less than welcoming crowd, “I’m looking forward to this fight. I’ve got to show the fans why I am the real champion.”

While he maintains the interim designation, Henderson feels the weight of this bout. “This is the fight of my life. This if the fight of my career,” he said after stepping off the scale.

Possibly overshadowing the main event, at least to a biased crowd, hometown favorite Urijah Faber is also making his return from injury. He’s been out of commission for six months, healing a broken hand. Ranked No. 3 in the world, he faces no easy road back in No. 4 ranked Raphael Assuncao. Faber weighed in Saturday at 145.5 pounds, while Assuncao was 146.

Bathed in cheers, Faber responded to a question about getting the WEC featherweight title back later this year by saying, “That’s my plan, but I’ve got a tough opponent (in Assuncao), and a tough road to get it.”

Assuncao knows this is a cornerstone fight in his career, but said simply, “This is a big fight. I’ll be ready.”

All 20 fighters made weight without a hitch.
