- WEC 40 LIVES RESULTS, PLAY-BY-PLAY AND PHOTOS

Sunday night in Chicago, WEC bantamweight champion Miguel Torres will defend his belt against No. 5 ranked Takeya Mizugaki at the UIC Pavilion. Also highlighting the 10-bout fight card are a clash between hometown favorite Jeff Curran and Urijah Faber disciple Joseph Benavidez.

Torres vs. Mizugaki airs live on the Versus network at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT on Sunday night, but MMAWeekly.com is in Chicago to bring you live coverage of the entire fight card.

WEC 40 PLAY-BY-PLAY:

-Miguel Torres vs. Takeya Mizugaki
R1 – Mizugaki lands a big right hand on Torres. The crowd chanting “Torres.” Torres gets hit with a low shot and tells Mizugaki to keep his shots up. They clinch and Torres lands knees. Mizugaki picks him up and slams him to the canvas. Torres with a stiff left jab. Mizugaki lands an overhand right. Torres with a leg kick h=that gets the crowd excited. MMAWeekly scores round one 10-9 for Mizugaki.

R2 – Mizugaki waitin for Torrex to come forward and landing shots. Torres trying to establish his reach, but Mizugaki’s striking is cleaner, crisper. Torres falls but gets back up. They clinch and Torres lands a left hook as they separate. Pace slows and they’re standing toe-to-toe. Both guys standing in the pocket and throwing combinations. Mizugaki lands a clean right hand, Torres lands a kick to the body and a left hood. They’re slugging it out. They’re clinched along the cage and Torres landing knees and shoulder punches. Torres clinches again and lands several knees to the body. MMAWeekly scores round two 10-9 for Torres.

R3 – Mizugaki moving forward but missing with his shots. Pace of he fight has slowed dramatically. Torres lands a grazing spinning back fist. Mizugaki lands a flurry along the fence. Mizugaki lands a counter left hook. Torres keeping at a distance. They check a small cut to Torres and the fight continues. Mizugaki with a right hand and Torres flurries. Both fighters flurring in the center of the cage. MMAWeekly scores it 10-9 for Mizugaki.

R4 – Mizugaki lands a left hand. Torres tries to take it to the ground. Torres flurries and sets up a takedown. Mizugaki in Torres’ half-guard. They’re back up on their feet. Torres clinches and lands a couple of eblows. They separate Torres catches him with a good shot off of a jab. They exchange knees and Torres lands a right hand and clinches. They’re back standing at a distance. Torres lands a solid right hand. Mizugaki looks winded. Heavy exchange of punches before the end of the round. MMAWeekly scores round four 10-9 for Torres.

R5 – Torres tries to pull guard but then stands and they exchange bombs against the cage. Torres tries a high kick but Mizugaki pushes him to the ground. Torres immediately back up. They clinch and Torres lands knees. Mizugaki lands a right hand, but Torres answers with a left hook to the body, right hook to the head combination. They clinch again with Torres pressing him against the cage. They separage with a minute remaining. Mizugaki with a left. Torres flurries back. The fight ends with them against the cage exchanging punches. MMAWeekly scores the final round 10-9 for Miguel Torres.

-Jeff Curran vs. Joseph Benavidez
R1 – Curran looking like a counter striker early as they get each other’s timing and range. Both throwing big shots but nothing landing as of yet with three minutes remaining. Benavidez attempts a superman punch but Curran lands a right hand down the middle. They clinch and exchange knees along the cage. Curran with an uppercut but Benavidez answers with a leg kick. Benavidez lands a right hand that puts Curran on his butt. Benavidez inside of Curran’s closed guard while Curran recovers. Benavidez standing above Curran landing kicks to his legs, and that’s the way the round ends. MMAWeekly scores the first round 10-9 for Benavidez.

R2 – Both guys trying to land kicks to the legs and head for the first minute. Curran misses with a superman punch and finds himself on his back with Benavidez in top position. Curran lands an up-kick and gets back to his feet. Uppercut landed by Curran but Benavidez counters with a hard right hand. Curran pulls guard and works for an arm bar. Benavidez is in side control momentarily but Curran regains full-guard. Benavidez lands a series of right hands and stands over the downed Curran. The round ends with Benavidez jumping into Curran’s guard landing punches. MMAWeekly scores the round 10-9 for Benavidez.

R3 – Wild exchanges in this round but neither doing damage. Curran catches a leg kick and delivers a right hand, but Curran responds wtih a high kick. Benavidez catches a kick from curran and trip-slams him. Curran back works back to his feet and slams Benavidez, but Benavidez gets up and gets Curran down. Curran desperately tries to find a submission as the seconds tick off the clock. He almost had a triangle, but Benavidez defends. MMAWeekly scores the final round 10-9 for Benavidez.

-Joseph Benavidez def. Jeff Curran by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

-Ben Henderson vs. Shane Roller
R1 – After twenty seconds of action, Roller lands a right hand that puts Henderson on his back, but Henderson recovers and gets back to his feet where he left hand that put Roller down and finished up with strikes on the ground.

-Raphael Assuncao vs. Jameel Massouh
R1 – Assuncao comes out aggressive. Massouh catches him and knocks Assuncao down but he bounces right back to his feet. Assuncao lands a right hand sending Massouh to the canvas. Massouh tries to secure a leg but Assuncao not in any danger. Assuncao takes Massouh down where he lands several right hands but Massouh scrambles back to his feet where the pace slows. Assuncao with a 1-2 combination and drops Massouh again with a straight right counter off of a Massouh leg kick. MMAWeekly scores round one 10-9 for Assuncao.

R2 – Assuncao finding his range and his right hand is finding it’s mark. Massouh’s chin has been tested a few times and he’s still in the fight. Assuncao works for a guillotine but gives it up. Massouh lands a kick to the body, but slips throwing a high kick. Assuncao jumps into his guard landing a few shots. The round ends in a scramble. MMAWeekly scores round two 10-9 for Assuncao.

R3 – Massouh stalking Assuncao, walking him down, but it’s Assuncao who lands a combination of punches. Massouh pulls guard. Assuncao makes him pay by grounding and pounding him with right hands. Assuncao tries to take his back but ends up on the bottom where Massouh lands little short shorts. Assuncao regains top position when Massouh tries to take his back. They scramble for position and the final seconds of the round plays out standing. MMAWeekly scores the final round 10-9 for Massouh.

-Bart Palaszewski vs. Anthony Njokuani
R1 – Palaszewski secures a takedown after a brief period of the fighters feeling each other out. Njokuani gets back up and establishes his jab. Njokuani switches stances using his reach and quickness to keep Palaszewski on the outside. Njokuani drops Bartimus with an overhand right, but is unable to finish on the ground. The referee stands them up and Palaszewski gets a double-leg takedown and finishes out the round in Njokuani’s guard. MMAWeekly scores the round 10-9 for Njokuani.

R2 – Njokuani lands another overhand right and then another that sends Palaszewski to the canvas. He finishes him with strikes on the ground.

-Ivan Lopez vs. Dominick Cruz
R1 – They feel each other out for a minute. Lopez lands a counter right hand that seemingly stuns Cruz and then lands a front kick. Cruz secures a takedown but Lopez gets back to his feet only to be taken down again. Cruz passes Lopez’ guard into side control but Lopez retains guard before Cruz passes it again. Cruz gets back up in a transition as Cruz tried to mount. Cruz lands another takedown and quickly moves to half-guard. Lopez gets up again in the final seconds. MMAWeekly scores round one 10-9 for Cruz.

R2 – After a minute of striking misses by both, Cruz takes the fight to the canvas where he works elbows and punches inside Lopez’ guard. Lopez can’t get Cruz off of him adn the round plays out with Cruz landing some shots on the ground, Lopez scrambling to get to back to his feet and Cruz ragaining control. Lopez does get to his feet for a few seconds where he lands a flurry of punches only to be taken down and elbowed as the round ends. MMAWeekly scores the round 10-9 for Cruz.

R3 – Both guys swing wildly for the opening minute of round three. Cruz elevates Lopez into the air and slams him to the canvas landing in half-guard. Lopez works his way back standing. Cruz lands a a knee to the downed Lopez causing an end to the fight when Lopez was unable to continue.

The knee didn’t look to land hard on the replay and certainly didn’t land at all where Lopez laid on the canvas holding his head. The fight goes to the judges because it ended by accidental foul after two rounds of action.

-Wagnney Fabiano vs. Fredson Paixao
R1 – Fabiano fires a high kick that is blocked, but follows it up with a right hand before the two Brazilians clinch along the cage. Fabiano lands a few knees to the body before they separate. Paixao tries to pull guard but Wagnney has none of it and tells Paixao to get up where the fight continues standing. They clinch for the remainder of the round with not a lot happening other than jockeying for position. MMAWeekly scores round one 10-9 for Fabiano.

R2 – The two ground specialists have remained standing. Paixao moves foward trying to land somethig, but Fabiano easily evades. They clinch for a moment against the cage and the referee separates them. After more chasing and elluding, Fabiano gets a single-leg takedown and landed in side control. Fabiano gets up and tells Paixao to do the same. Fabiano catches Paixao with a straight left hand stunning him and follows up with a grazing high kick as the round ends. MMAWeekly scores the round 10-9 for Fabiano.

R3 – Fabiano lands a right hand to start the round and Paixao tries to pull guard. Fabiano shoots for a double-leg and gets it. Not long on the ground, the fight is brought back to it’s feet. Fabiano huts Paixao with a left hand to the liver. Paixao recovers but Fabiano peppers him with leg kicks before going for a single leg. MMAWeekly scores round three 10-9 for Fabiano.

-Wagnney Fabiano def. Fredson Paixao by unanimous decision (30-27,30-27, 30-27)

-Rani Yahya vs. Eddie Wineland
R1 – Yahya goes for a single-leg takedown. Wineland defends but Yahya takes his back sinking in a rear naked choke. Wineland is forced to tap out.

-Akitoshi Tamura vs. Manny Tapia
R1 – Tamura misses with a high kick, but lands two leg kicks and one to the body. Tapia moving forward but Tamura keeps him on the outside with kicks. Tapia trying to time a right hand off of Tamura’s kicks. They clinch where Tapia works punches to the body and Tamura delivers knees. They separate and got back to exchanging. Tapia’s punches beginning to find their mark. Tamura clinches. As they separate, Tapia lands a combination. Tamura answers with a knee. MMAWeekly scores the round 10-9 for Tapia. Close round.

R2 – Tapia comes out aggressive, landing a combination. Tamura lands his best punch of the fight thus far with a right hand that lands flush on Tapia’s jaw. Tamura continues to works kicks from the outside will Tapia looks to land punches. Tamura lands a front kick to Tapia’s face bloodying the Californian’s nose. Tapia using his boxing to land punches on he inside. Extremely close round. MMAWeekly score it 10-9 for Tamura.

R3 – Tapia moving foward, but when he does, Tamura covers up well. Tamura throws a kick and Tapia stands his ground and fires off punches in bunches. It’s been the theme of the fight. Tamura will throw one kick and Tapia answers with two punches. Tamura shoots for a takedown, the first of he fight, but Tapia sprawls and they’re back on their feet. Tapia turns it on in the final thirty seconds, landing uppercuts and hooks. Round three definitely goes to Tapia.

-Rafael Dias vs. Mike Budnik
R1 – They two exchange leg kicks before hitting the ground where Dias finds himself in Budnik’s guard. Dias transitions to side control and quickly works to the mount position. Budnik works back to guard and applies a heel hook. Dias escapes works Budnik over the the fence. Budnik gets back to his feet only to find himself in a guillotine. Budnik gets out of it but Dias applies an arm triangle choke. The round ends. MMAWeekly scores round one 10-9 for Dias.

R2 – Dias immediately gets the takedown in the opening seconds where he works ground and pound for the next three minutes with Budnik doing his best to get off the bottom. Dias advances his position to side control with just over a minute remaining before moving to North-South postion. Budnik reverses him and briefly gains control, but Dias ends the round inside of Budnik’s guard. MMAWeekly scores the round 10-9 for Dias.

R3 – Dias rushes in and gets an early takedown to start the final round. It’s looking a lot like the first two rounds with Dias in Budnik’s guard working ground and pound while Budnik peppers him back with elbows from the bottom. Budnik tries to set up an arm bar but it wasn’t there. The referee stands them up. Dias gets another takedown and Budnik works for a triangle choke. Dias has none of it. Budnik attempts another arm bar and when it wasn’t there, went for a leg. Dias spent much of the round fending off submission attempts. MMAWeekly scores round three 10-9 for Budnik.
