SAN DIEGO – World Extreme Cagefighting makes its San Diego Sports Arena debut on Sunday night with a title showdown between current WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner and challenger Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone, and a co-main event rematch between former featherweight kingpin Urijah Faber and Jens Pulver.
The main eventers and the rest of the WEC 38 cast stepped on the scales to weigh in on Saturday afternoon. Most of the fighters made weight without a hitch. Blas Avena, Edgar Garcia, and Ben Henderson, however, all came in half a pound over the limit for their respective bouts. Each was given an hour to drop the weight and make their fights official.
Henderson accepted his bout against Anthony Njokuani on just a few days of notice.
All three fighters made weight on their second attempt.
After wresting the title away from former champ “Razor” Rob McCullough, Varner attempts the second defense of his belt when he faces Cerrone, having defeated Marcus Hicks last August.
The only hiccup in Cerrone’s career has been a no contest against Kenneth Alexander. Cerrone had won the bout, but the result was changed following a positive drug test for a diuretic. He is otherwise 9-0 in professional MMA with eight submissions, following a 22-0-1 kickboxing career.
Faber– once considered nearly unbeatable in the featherweight division – came up short against Mike Brown in November. He returns Sunday night in an attempt to once again fend off Pulver, having won a unanimous five-round decision over the former UFC champ this past June.
On a two-fight losing skid – he was TKO’d by Leonard Garcia on the same Florida fight card that Faber lost his title – the 34-year-old Pulver is widely considered to be at a make or break point in his career. A win over
Faber propels him towards another run at title contention. A loss could leave him to reassess his career and determine his future in the sport.
