When K-1 fighter Randy Blake heard that Tyrone Spong was making his MMA debut a couple of weeks back at World Series of Fighting, he had high hopes that his former kickboxing brethren would do very well in his new found home.
Spong delivered in a big way, knocking out Travis Bartlett in the first round, and becoming the latest kickboxer to have a successful turn into MMA. Blake admits he was none too surprised to see what Spong was able to do.
“I knew he would get in there and knock the guy out. Tyrone’s a dynamic fighter, he’s got excellent power, excellent kicks, and he looked great for his fight,” Blake told MMAWeekly Radio.
Blake also backs up Spong’s idea of facing a top boxer if he ever crossed over to that sport as well.
Following his MMA debut, Spong mentioned that he would love a shot at one of the heavyweight Klitschko brothers. Whether it was Wladimir or Vitali, Spong was happy to show off against either one in the ring.
Some scoffed at the idea that a kickboxer could transition to boxing and do very well, but Blake believes Spong would do better than just handle himself.
“Honestly I would have to go with the kickboxer. If they were to fight, I’d pick Tyrone to win it,” Blake stated.
“It’s not like the guy can’t throw his hands. It would be different if Klitschko was going to kickboxing match, he’d get murdered fast. But we’re talking about Tyrone going to boxing and he’s knocked out people with his hands before.”
With all the talk about Blake supporting his fellow kickboxer’s move into MMA, then obvious question then becomes what about Blake making the move himself?
The Ohio native now living in Oklahoma isn’t opposed to the idea actually. After more than 20 wins in kickboxing with 16 knockouts, Blake knows with the right training he could make that move, and it could happen one day soon.
“I would definitely love to do it. Obviously that’s a different sport, you’ve got different things you have to work on, get a hold of the right guys and get some training in and I would definitely be up for it,” said Blake.
“There’s no reason why I can’t do it, the sky’s the limit.”
