War Machine: A Beautiful Disaster

A lot of fans remember Jon Koppenhaver from the sixth season of the Ultimate Fighter, where the brash and outspoken fighter was one of the more colorful characters to ever appear on the reality show.

He proceeded to have an epic battle at the finale with former housemate Jared Rollins, which still stands as one of the best fights in the show’s history.

The story from there takes several twists and turns.

After a loss to Yoshiyuki Yoshida in 2008, Koppenhaver exited the UFC, legally changed his name to War Machine and it’s been a rollercoaster ride ever since.

War Machine continued to fight, picking up wins in six of his next eight fights, but also ran into several legal problems. The biggest of which landed him a one year jail sentence in California for a felony assault conviction.

During his time in jail, War Machine continued to reach the outside world through his Twitter account by sending letters to a friend and having them put his words up on his social network.

Once he was back in circulation after serving his sentence, War Machine scheduled a fight against former UFC lightweight Roger Huerta and picked up an impressive win via TKO in the third round.

Just when it appeared War Machine was getting his life back on track, he once again ran into the justice system when he was sentenced on a previous case of assault. The former Ultimate Fighter surrendered to authorities recently to begin another one year stint in jail, this time in Las Vegas.

“He came at me, I’m a professional fighter, but I’m still human. The media twists it and exaggerates it to sound like I’m a monster. I’m not a monster,” War Machine told Spike TV’s MMA Uncensored in an interview that will air this Thursday night. “I’m just beating myself up inside, I was doing everything right, like why’d this happen?”

War Machine spoke with the show just a day before he went to jail for his second sentence, where he will serve the next 12 months. It was a hard pill to swallow for the long time fighter, but what may be most surprising is that he doesn’t regret the path he’s taken.

If he had to do it all over again, War Machine would make the same choices.

“Every time I’ve ever been in trouble, I still feel like I did the right thing. Every time,” said War Machine. “I don’t know how to walk away.”

A friend of War Machine’s also speaks out during the interview, and from the sound of things the former UFC competitor is simply his own worst enemy.

“He’s a beautiful disaster,” Julio Bazan said about his friend War Machine before he surrendered himself to jail. “He does whatever he wants, he doesn’t think about what’s going to happen next, he doesn’t think about repercussions, he lives in the now.”

The now unfortunately for War Machine is another year in jail.

Check out the clip of War Machine from Spike TV’s MMA Uncensored and for the full interview tune into the show at 11pm ET/PT on Thursday night.

      This about sums it up!

  • DrkDisciple

This story brought a tear to my eye…..left eye to be more specific. On a more positive note I am now considering a legal name change to Mr Dark Disciple.

  • Triggerman99

It’s gotta go real well for you in prison when everyone finds out that you’re name is War Machine, right? I’m sure he doesn’t regret that at all right now.

I feel especially bad for “El Matador”. I had no idea Huerta was finished by this guy.

  • Tough break Jon. I always liked this guy. He opened up to the world on TUF about his difficult upbringing. He is local to SD which I also favored. I will aways be a fan. Hopefully the next 12 months will help him to learn how to swallow his pride and walk away, many of us can probably relate. This guy has tremendous heart in the cage. Good luck WM!

What? No talk about his adult film career? LOL

  • fitefan

Knowing he would serve two 1 yr jail sentences, he would do it all over again.

I would have loved to seen the look on the Judge’s face when they called out the name War Machine for assualt charges, and then had to listen to the War Machine make his case.

I read the court transcript a few weeks ago, not much to offer as far as defense. The only crappy part is that he’s going back for something he did before he went away the first time. At the end of the day you do the crime you do the time, but it seems like after his 1st stint he started to get his shit together and now he’s going back to jail anyway.

  • mmachoman

“War Machine” is a cool nickname but the coolness pretty much ends there.

    • Anthony

That really means alot coming from someone named mmachoman-lol

      • mmachoman

Hey, don’t mess with Randy Savage. Macho Man’s beard alone could beat up “War Machine”.

  • somecokehead

Now this is my type of fighter!! Wonder how much c0ke he was on when he beat the sh1t out of some other loud mouth drunk/coke head? Lord knows that they never use drugs in the porno industry? Jail sucks no matter who you are. I doubt it will help him. Could hurt him! must say I enjoyed his fights! Good Luck War.

  • Human garbage. Stupid and weak. A total loser.
