Wanderlei Silva Tries to “Chael Sonnen” Chael Sonnen, but It Doesn’t Appear to Work

Chael Sonnen vs Wanderlei Silva PosterChael Sonnen, upon announcing that he wasn’t ready for retirement, immediately took aim at lining up his first post-Jon Jones opponent, Wanderlei Silva.

Sonnen lobbied hard and heavy for the fight, even going so far as making up his own promotional poster, trying to make the fight happen on the UFC’s upcoming Fox Sports 1 event in August.

When Silva didn’t respond, Sonnen issued an ultimatum.

“Wand- you have 24 hours to accept,” he tweeted. “If you do, I will donate 10% of my purse to help schools in your hometown of Curitiba .. I mean, VEGAS.”

The deadline has come and gone, and it appears that the opportunity to put the fight together may have as well.

“I only follow a couple of rules in fighting, but one of them is you don’t bully a guy,” said Sonnen on Tuesday night’s edition of UFC Tonight. “If a guy doesn’t want to fight, you don’t keep picking on him.

“I gave (Silva) the timeline. I was also giving it to myself. If he doesn’t answer, I’m done and I’ll move on, and I have.”

Sonnen was then hit with comments from UFC Tonight reporter Ariel Helwani, who spoke with Silva prior to the show.

Silva said that he hadn’t even heard of Sonnen’s deadline, and added that UFC officials have not offered him the bout. He sounded as if he wanted the fight, however, providing a few choice words aimed squarely at Sonnen.

“Jon Jones and Anderson Silva have been too nice to Chael. I want to suck his blood. I want to smell it,” he said. “Not just fight. Not just fight. I want to hurt him.

“Chael is a joke man. He is going to be second forever. He is never going to be first.”

Silva was obviously playing Sonnen’s baiting game and shoving it right back in his face, but it didn’t sound as if Sonnen took the hook.

“I think the real breaking news there is that Wanderlei Silva put together a coherent sentence that somebody understood,” commented Sonnen. “But I can assure you, Wanderlei, I will not be signing a contract for you to suck on any part of me. I suggest you go to a bath and find yourself.”

    Say what you want about him, but Chael’s always good for a chuckle;

“But I can assure you, Wanderlei, I will not be signing a contract for you to suck on any part of me”.

      Wand wants none of Chael.

Wand is a legend. Chael is not a legend. In that regard, Wand is above Chael.

But at this point in time, I have doubts that Wand can beat Chael.

And it would be a huge embarrassment for Wand to lose to Chael.

      • Gary Fredericks

I agree, but I would still love to watch this as a fan.

      • Supaman

exactly on the nose. Chael would take Wandy down at will and everyone knows this.

Wandy has limited fights remaining. Some possible fights:

        1) Cung Le rematch

        2) Belfort / Rockhold loser

        3) Uriah Hall

        4) Hector Lombard

        5) Alan Belcher

        6) Yushin Okami

-although Okami & Lombard are probably too high on the rankings… but these are probably the few interesting match-ups left for Wandy

I think at 205, Wand has a better chance. But as a fan of Wand, I just don’t want to see him lose to Chael Sonnen.

        • I would hate to see him rematch Cung. Belfort is something interesting just because he wants that fight still. Uriah Hall is way to new to the UFC and is coming off a loss. Hector Lombard is moving to WW. Belcher and Okami I could possibly see. Every fight I get so nervous for Wandy. Even though I am a huge fan of his I count him out sometimes. Awesome fight with Stann. He should just fight Chael and maybe retire but the guy loves this sport so who knows.

I like him vs Hall! Wandy is done in the sense of competing for meaningful fights. If Hall can’t beat him, he deserves none of the TUF hype.

          • What do you think of Stann vs Hall?

      • Jew Jitsu

i thought the final part was the best of his comments when he hit him with the i suggest you go to a bath and find yourself line.

Wanderlei says the strangest things. Suck his blood, smell it? WTF?

Sonnen knows that Wanderlei is mentally slow, he should have given him 48 or 72 hours, takes him a while.

    • urdooomb

It’s because English is Wandy’s second language you doomby

  • Phael Sonnen

Responding to the title, did he try to dry hump someone for 15-25 minutes, throw over 300 pillow punches and then quit/tap when someone wrapped their legs around him?

    • Gary Donald

You are so ignorant it is amazing you can put a coherent thought together let alone a sentence. I would love to see you hit with 300 “pillow punches” to see you fetal up, cry your eyes out and scream I submit. Things like you aren’t even worthy of a courteous response. You are only worth an insult, even that takes time out of my day I could be doing something relevant.

  • George Sperry

This is just Chael trying to talk himself into another payday he doesn’t deserve. He loses, loses and loses then his fans want more of him.
I wonder how coherent a sentence Chael could form in Portuguese?

    • Cuntlick

Exactly. Chael has probably made more money in last 2 yrs than any other fighters except the champions. He’s not the great but knows how to market himself. Wandy is always a big draw and Chael is trying to take advantage of him

    • Corby Oliver

He doesn’t deserve it? Chael is 6-4 in his last 10 with 3 of his losses coming to the #1 and #2 fighter in the world currently. He’s 12-1 in non-title fights over the last several years.

Wand is 4-6 in his last 10, half of those losses were brutal KO’s and Wand hasn’t been near a title since returning to the UFC……

Who doesn’t deserve who by the number? 🙂

      • urdooomb

by the numbers you are absolutely right.

But for his win over Stann, I don’t see how this fight would make sense.

even with the win over Stann, I just don’t see Wandy lasting too long in the UFC. He reminds me of Nog, a punch drunk washed up legend who can get KOed any moment.

  • Baller31

Finally, Chael is picking on someone whom he can beat!
