Vitor Belfort vs. Michael Bisping Heads UFC in Brazil 12-Bout Fight Card

Posted on by Ken Pishna

Vitor Belfort vs Michael BispingThe Ultimate Fighting Championship on Saturday announced the full fight card for its Jan. 19 return to Brazil. A middleweight showdown between Vitor Belfort and Michael Bisping heads the card.

A location for the event isn’t quite ready to be revealed. The event will, however, be broadcast in Brazil exclusively by Channel Combat.

The UFC, as they did in 2012, is kicking off 2013 in Brazil in what will likely be the first of several events in the country throughout the year. There has been speculation that the promotion is targeting as many as 12 events in Brazil in 2013.

“As we had anticipated, 2013 will be a busy year for the Brazilian fans. We are very happy with this event on Jan. 19 that, just as we did in 2012, opens the calendar year of the UFC,” said Marshall Zelaznik, director UFC’s international development, before adding that they hope to announce the location “in the coming weeks.”

Belfort (21-10) is coming off of a loss to Jon Jones at UFC 152 in September. The Brazilian stepped up on short notice to challenge the light heavyweight champion after several other fighters turned down the opportunity.

Belfort now returns to middleweight and his home country to headline the show against Bisping (23-4).

The Englishman enters the fight hot on the heels of an important victory over Brian Stann, also on the UFC 152 fight card in Toronto. Bisping has been angling for a shot at middleweight champion Anderson Silva. A win over Belfort would certainly put him in contention for the shot.

I think this is going to be on FX so they will put on a doo doo card regardless to please the bog boys at FOX

    Terrible card!

  • DiazBrothers209

vitor is gonna blitz bisping just like he should’ve against that soft snitch jon jones. vitor by ko round 1

Who’s Anderson gonna step in to fight to save this card?

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Prince-James/100002133397048 Prince James

Chael because he will say YES!!!

  • jungleking

what about weidman – boestch, winner should also get a title shot. Then anderson should fight gsp. i believe that 3 fights not gonna happened next year. someone will drop off even (bisping-wiedman/boestch) even if they deserve the title shot. nice matchmaking ufc… :)

    • TandmWarElephant

I don’t think thats a title contention fight at all really… a win over mark munoz isn’t as cracked up as the “rankings” make it up to be, and a win over hector lombard? he might as well have fought any other welterweight in the ufc, yushin is a legitimate win but not enough to make a statement really.. so why would this guys deserve a shot over bisping? i mean i can see the controversy if belfry gets the title shot but man bisping is a win win for everybody the fans get to finally see Bisping fight anderson and the haters get to see him get beat up (possibly).. i would rather see bispin than boestch or weidman

One of the best arguments I’ve ever seen on this topic. The fan boys take too much personal feeling in to it…this is exactly how it should go!!!

        • TandmWarElephant

Thanks a lot, honestly i was expecting to get so much hate from my comment! I mean I am a Bisping fan so I am somewhat biased but it doesn’t change the fact that the dude at least deserves a shot at Silva before he retires

Yep really bad card!!! Wonder who bisping fights when Belfort gets injured

  • http://www.facebook.com/mark.mcdowall.14 Mark McDowall

IF Belfort stays healthy it should be a good fight. If Bisping wins he deserves a title shot, theres no way you can argue that anyone deserves a shot before him with a win over Belfort.

    • shakejunt

although vitor is coming off the loss, i agree, but he’ll end up fighting weidman/boetsch if they set up silva-gsp

      • http://www.facebook.com/mark.mcdowall.14 Mark McDowall

Yeah your probably right. But has far more significant wins than anyone else in the division, it still doesn’t sense how Weidman/Boetch can be considered contenders ahead of bisping.

  • Mike

So after a good fight and win over stann and what I thought should have been a narrow win against sonnen why is bisping not in a fight for a potential title shot with weidman, boetsch or belcher, but in one against the phenom (who i am a fan of) who just lost to a title fight jones? With anderson saying no one is ready to fight him, surely it makes sense to put some top guys in the division in a #1 contender fight?!

Wagner Cauldron…so in other words, Prado is getting Hollet after losing to Davis? Not that I disagree…just seemed soon was all.

And personally, I think this card’s a good one. Can’t expect every card to look PPV worthy. That said, Dana can benefit from expanding his roster a bit

  • adam1848

I think this is a perfect match up. Bisping has fallen short every time he has faced someone that would justify giving him a title shot. In fact, he has never really beaten anybody very good, except Stann, but Stann (who I respect) has never really beaten anybody very good either. If Bisping beats Vitor, he can finally say with a straight face that he deserves a title shot. Should be a very good fight. As should Nik Lentz v Diego Nunes. Other than that, the rest of the fights seem very one sided or irrelevant in my opinion.

    • adam1848

Wish Nurmagomedov had a more substantial challenge. I’m excited to really see what this guy is made of.

Is it me or does it seem Dana doesn’t want the fights in the U.S. anymore.

Nothing against Vitor but I want Bisping to win this. Guys been in the UFC a long time now, and has only lost to the best guys and only stopped by Hendo of all people. Excellent kickboxer, incredible footwork and always game.

    WAR BELFORT!!
