Chael Sonnen may believe that Vitor Belfort will drop out of his recently accepted bout with UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones before the scheduled Sept. 22 date in Toronto, but you’d never guess that by Belfort’s enthusiasm Monday night on AXS TV’s Inside MMA.
The former UFC light heavyweight champion has been competing in recent years at middleweight, but is returning to 205 pounds to challenge Jones at UFC 152 as a late replacement for an injured Dan Henderson.
“Bas, remember, I am from your time; we are old school guys. We are the type of fighters, we adapt to fight. We are ready to fight tomorrow in the gym,” Belfort reminded Inside MMA co-host Bas Rutten. “I used to fight in the Carlson Gracie time; we used to fight every day in the gym.
“Taking this fight on such short notice and going up in the division, it’s an awesome journey in myself.”
Belfort had been on the cusp of earning another shot at UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva. He had been slated to face Alan Belcher at UFC 153 in Brazil, but jumped at the opportunity to replace Henderson in the fight with Jones, even though it couldn’t be done in time to save UFC 151, which was cancelled late last week.
It was in time, however, to headline UFC 152 in Toronto when Lyoto Machida opted not to accept that slot, citing a lack of time for a proper fight camp to prepare.
