Vitor Belfort at UFC 126Chael Sonnen may believe that Vitor Belfort will drop out of his recently accepted bout with UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones before the scheduled Sept. 22 date in Toronto, but you’d never guess that by Belfort’s enthusiasm Monday night on AXS TV’s Inside MMA.

The former UFC light heavyweight champion has been competing in recent years at middleweight, but is returning to 205 pounds to challenge Jones at UFC 152 as a late replacement for an injured Dan Henderson.

“Bas, remember, I am from your time; we are old school guys. We are the type of fighters, we adapt to fight. We are ready to fight tomorrow in the gym,” Belfort reminded Inside MMA co-host Bas Rutten. “I used to fight in the Carlson Gracie time; we used to fight every day in the gym.

“Taking this fight on such short notice and going up in the division, it’s an awesome journey in myself.”

Belfort had been on the cusp of earning another shot at UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva. He had been slated to face Alan Belcher at UFC 153 in Brazil, but jumped at the opportunity to replace Henderson in the fight with Jones, even though it couldn’t be done in time to save UFC 151, which was cancelled late last week.

It was in time, however, to headline UFC 152 in Toronto when Lyoto Machida opted not to accept that slot, citing a lack of time for a proper fight camp to prepare.

Check out what else Belfort had to say in his Inside MMA interview below…

Am I the only one that believes Vitor can pull this off? JBJ has the reach on everyone but he will not be able to muscle Vitor around like hes been able to do to everyone else. Seems like people tend to forget Vitor has very very underated TDD. Anthony Johnson who walks around 220-230lbs couldnt get Vitor down and Johnson is veryy strong. Not trying to do comparisons but im just saying its no easy task to get Belfort to the ground. Jones does have the advantage in the kicks and the reach, but I do have to say Vitor has better hands and KO power. Vitor ran into a sting of a kick to the face from Anderson Silva but who can even compare the standup from Silva to Jones. Silva is far superior of a standup fighter than anyone in MMA from 170-205.

I agree completely with you. Vitor might pull this one off. From the interview i saw he is very focused, determined and hungry! All for Vitor! 🙂

    • shakejunt

rumble missed weight by 11 pounds and was knocking vitor around prior to gassing in 3 minutes.

      • used2bgood

AJ id a different animal. Explosive, dangerous, hits hard and pushes forward…Vitor had to withstand an early storm and finished the fight wonderfully.

I think you assume that Jones is going to try to take Vitor down. I don’t think he’s going to do that at all. He’s probably going to beat him on the feat. I respect Belfort a lot, and yes he has very fast hands, but Jones is just better in all facets of the game. When you combine that with his strength and size advantage, it’s easy to see why this fight opened up at 13:1.

Honestly, though, you should throw a 100 dollars down on Belfort. Those odds are just funny to me. I think Belfort has a better chance than the odds makers, that’s for sure.

    • Lesnardo

Yes, you are the only one. You and others that always (for some reason) support the underdog.

Vitor can’t be muscled around by Jones??? LOL!!

Vitor got muscled around by Hendo, Arona (ADCC), Randy, Tito, Alistair and virtually every guy he lost too.

      Just stfu.

Look before I say this don’t get me wrong anderson silva has one if not the best standup in the game but who’s sniffing real close to having one of the best stand up’s in the game Jon Jones. Two Jones has fought fighters with good stand up’s and are by no means slow Shogun not slow, Lyoto no where near slow, Rashad let me slap anyone who thinks he’s slow, and even Rampage put his best effort. All these guys I just mentioned are monsters and are known as possibly some of the best knockout artists of all time shoot even Lyoto mainly gets the knockout screw what critics say most of the people he fought he knocked out. So for him dominating such high quality opponents I got to go for Jones on this one specially with him probally being the bigger LHW. But who’s to say Vitor can’t win he has a puncher’s chance just like dan who was some of the fastest hands in the game along with power so who knows but my votes Jones if we look at stats here

  • Madmaax9

I’m jumping at that bandwagon. Not happy he joined the ” Blackzillians” but we’ll see. He def has the speed and KO power to catch Jones. Wouldn’t want to see him get caught up in the clinch and wrestling game though. Excited for this one!

    • Lesnardo

Vitor does well against 185ers. He lost all his big fights at 205 except the one against Wandy back in the days.

  • bajafox

Will the real #1 205lb title contender please stand up, please stand up…

  • inebriatedmc

Jon Jones emotions will be too much for him to handle. He now has a target on himself. Fighters and fans alike will continue ripping JBJ a new one til fight time. His inability to deal with his emotions will be his downfall.

    • Lesnardo

you r a horrible writer. I don’t understand what you are saying. Also, your content seems to suuck.

  • acspida#244

He has delt with the pressure of 4 title fights quite well so far along with living up to hype that surrounded him coming up through the ranks. I do agree, that this is a different, more intense pressure from fans and media than he has felt with in the past. It may be unfair to speak of demise prior to the fight. Time will tell.

    • Lesnardo

When did a champion lose a fight solely because of the “hype” surrounding him?

      U r writing a fantasy novel bro.

  • diazfan209

so, Jon Jones wins the title by getting the champion on short notice, won’t defend his title against an opponent who’s on short notice, and now gets another challenger who’s on short notice…… 205 is s joke

  • shaman

I hope Vitor wins. What a beautiful story that would be

  • Spartacus

GO VITOR!!! It would be a great story should he win and no doubt he has as good a chance if not better then Hendo. I think Hendo is the man btw. Him and Randy are Faking LEGENDS.

  • Spartacus

    Freaking Legends….

  • maybe he should cancel this fight or get another traffic violation, very dissapointed in him since he has gotten the title and some of his fights going to decision, safe to say im looking forward to seeing Stann take out loud mouth bisping more than whomever does get to fight jones if it is in fact gonna stay vitor

    • Lesnardo

dude, only his Rashad fight went to decision.

And your writing is so bad that I can’t make out what you are saying other than you saying something about “some of his fights going to decision.” And something about traffic violation.
