UFC 147 just can’t catch a break.

Well, technically a break is what is going to stop the main event from happening as Ultimate Fighter Brazil coach Vitor Belfort has suffered a broken hand and is out of his main event fight against Wanderlei Silva.

UFC President Dana White confirmed the news following UFC 146 on Saturday night.

UFC 147 has undergone several issues since being announced for June 23 in Brazil.

First the event was supposed to take place at a soccer stadium in Rio De Janeiro, but a United Nations conference forced the UFC to vacate those plans and shift the card to a smaller arena and move the main event between Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen to UFC 148 in Las Vegas instead.

Now, the main event for what remains of UFC 147 has also been scrapped with Belfort out of the fight with Silva.

White confirmed they are actively seeking a replacement to step in and face Silva on the June 23 card, but no announcement has been made yet on who it will be.

Belfort coached opposite Silva on the current season of the Ultimate Fighter Brazil, which finishes up in the next few weeks as the two final fights for the inaugural season will also take place at UFC 147.

Unfortunately, Belfort won’t be on the card now due to the broken hand. will have more information on the new main event for UFC 147 when it becomes available.

  • That coaching gig on TUF is cursed.

Belcher? Akiyama back to 185? Hope they don’t rematch Wand with Bisping.

Maybe Chael could fly down to Brazil and save the day. He could fight Wanderlei as a warm up them go defend his belt against Anderson 3 weeks later.

  • Shields? Stann? Okami?

    • troop

Shields got Herman, Stann got Lombard and Okami got Cane. I like your first suggestion of Belcher vs Wandy. Seems to fit without breaking up a scheduled fight. Another fighter needing a fight in fellow Brazilian Ronny Markes and if those two don’t work, then go with Palhares.

  • palhares sounds about right IMO…keeps within the theme of brazilian vs. brazilian…the only other “top” MW thats not paired up is belcher but would the UFC want to risk pissing off the entire country when belcher wrecks wand?

It’s not going to piss off the entire country because Belcher won’t act like a disrespectful ass clown like Chael. I’d personally rather see that matchup rather than Palhares.

      • riiiiight, because belcher was very respectful after beating palhares…hahaha…yeah ok buddy…guess you missed that post fight rant…the simple fact belcher would wreck wandy in his home country is reason enough to piss off the country nevermind what he may or may not say…couple that with how belcher acted after beating palhares and you can guarentee brazil is already hating him…it would be a nice feather in the cap of belcher tho to beat a legend like wand eventhough hes out of the top 10 by far…

I did watch that fight and I do remember him being a bit cocky at the end but I would attribute it to adrenaline induced euphoria taking over his brain. I don’t think it was meant to be disrespectful. Maybe I’m totally wrong. I’ll have to watch it again to see for myself. It sure wasn’t on a level with the calculating dis-respectfulness of Chael Sonnen though, I think we can agree on that.

On another note….other than for nostalgia why did Vitor take this fight in the first place. Wandy has been inconsistent at best recently and other than losing at the hands of Anderson, Vitor has been on a pretty good roll. He’s already got a win against him when he was in his prime. What would winning this fight have done for him?

      • AdamBianski

This fight was only put together to make us believe Vitor was still a contender.

      • A. people have been begging for this rematch for years and years…once leben decimated wand the demand kinda died out because people realized how far wand has fallen but, still, its an anticipated rematch, its really for the fans

        B. they both coached TUF brazil and its customary to have the coaches fight

        C. 2 huge brazilian MMA stars fighting in brazil is a winning recipe

        • MuayThaiFood

Yeah, I get it, but like you said it’s a little too late to make much sense now.

  • Maybe Frankie Edgar could step in and when he loses get an immediate rematch? 😉

  • AdamBianski

Shucks I was really looking forward to finding out who won the next day, as this fight was already not even worth reading the play-by-play on mmaweekly.

I think everyone is pretty much on saying Belcher or Palhares, but I’ll throw a random in there and say maybe Consta drops the fight with Fukuda and fills in?

    • i wouldnt mind seeing that fight as its one ive thought about before but its not even close to main event worthy…main card fight? sure…but no way does that fight headline a PPV even with injuries taken into consideration…it would have to be either a popular brazilian fighter or a top 10 MW…

      • shakejunt

yeah i hear ya, they’re in a tough position with this one

  • smill0313

Belcher should fight the guy who gave him that johnny cash tatoo because it looks more like hank hill.
