Vitor Belfort will finally get his chance to fight at home in Brazil again. He has agreed to face Anthony “Rumble” Johnson at UFC 142 in January.
UFC officials confirmed the bout on Tuesday.
One of the true stars of Brazilian MMA, Belfort didn’t get the chance to fight on the last UFC card in his home country, but he was a very adamant supporter.
Now with the UFC returning there on Jan. 14, 2012, Belfort will get his chance to fight at home as he becomes the second Brazilian confirmed for the card. Jose Aldo was announced for the show on Monday.
For years, everybody has told Anthony “Rumble” Johnson that he should fight at middleweight. “Everybody” includes UFC president Dana White. Well, whether it’s a temporary move or not, Johnson is going up to 185 pounds for the chance to fight Belfort.
Since recovering from a knee injury that sidelined him for the better part of a year, Johnson returned earlier this year and has now racked up two wins in a row over Dan Hardy and Charlie Brenneman.
Now Johnson will go up to middleweight and face a legitimate top ten opponent for his first fight at 185 pounds.
The fight between Johnson and Belfort is expected to be a main card fight, but as of right now it hasn’t been officially dubbed co-main event. More information on the UFC 142 fight card will be made available in the coming weeks.
