World Extreme Cagefighting earlier this week announced its first foray into Canada… on June 20 at Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta.
The promotion on Thursday revealed four WEC 49 bouts, including the main event between former lightweight champion Jamie Varner and rising contender Kamal Shalorus.
Other bouts include Josh Grispi and LC Davis trying to narrow the field for a shot at the featherweight title, as well as several Canadian fighters.
Chris Horodecki, who fights out of London, Ontario, faces fellow striker Ed Ratcliff in a lightweight battle, and Thamesford, Ontario, featherweight Mark Hominick faces Georges St-Pierre teammate and Montreal-based fighter Yves Jabouin.
“We are really excited to bring WEC to Canada for the first time on June 20,” WEC General Manager Reed Harris said. “We’ve learned that Canada is home to some of the most passionate mixed martial arts fans in the world. With that said, we can’t wait to get to Edmonton and put the best lighter weight fighters in the world on display.”
WEC 49 will be televised live on VERSUS in the U.S. beginning at 9:00 p.m. ET/6:00 p.m. PT.
