by Ken Pishna – MMAWeekly.com Ulysses Gomez, who defeated Travis Reddinger in the opening round of Bellator’s Season 3 bantamweight tournament, has been forced to withdraw from the tournament due to a severe staph infection, according to MMAWeekly.com sources.

Gomez (7-1) entered the Bellator tournament after having defeated Luis Gonzalez for the Tachi Palace Fights flyweight (125-pound) championship.

He won a narrow split decision over Reddinger at Bellator 27, moving him a step closer to his goal of earning the distinction of becoming the first Bellator bantamweight (135-pound) champion.

There has been no word yet on the timetable for Gomez’s return or a replacement for him in the tournament. Gomez’s manager, Tom Call, and Bellator officials were unavailable for comment at the time of publication.
