Chael Sonnen and Jon Jones UFCThe Ultimate Fighter will soon serve as a lead-in to one of the top nights in all of television for FX networks.

The long running reality show will move to Tuesday nights starting on Jan. 22 with the debut of The Ultimate Fighter 17, which pits UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones against Chael Sonnen.

The show will also move to a new 9 p.m. start time, shifting away from its current 10 p.m. slot occupied on Friday nights on FX.

FX officials confirmed the date, time and debut date to MMAWeekly.com on Monday. MMAJunkie.com first reported the switch based on an advertisement in UFC Magazine.

The move will now land The Ultimate Fighter as a lead-in to the popular FX drama “Justified,” which returns on Jan. 8 for its newest season at 10 p.m.

The Timothy Olyphant led drama is one of FX’s biggest shows, and routinely draws very good ratings including last season’s finale topping 2.6 million viewers.

The Ultimate Fighter will then become the lead-in to an even bigger hit on Tuesday nights in September when the No. 1 rated FX show “Sons of Anarchy” returns for its sixth season.

The outlaw biker drama is FX’s top-rated program, routinely pulling in well over three million viewers, with some episodes topping five million viewers throughout the 13-episode run.

The Ultimate Fighter debuts on Jan. 22 for its 17th season with coaches Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen squaring off in their fight on April 27 in New Jersey.

I don’t see this as a good move going up against the CBS NCIS duo

  • Damon Martin

Typically speaking, NCIS gets HUGE ratings but their demographic is aimed at a little older crowd. They aim at 25-54 mostly. TUF/Sons of Anarchy/Justified all point at 18-34

Bad move…Tuesday’s are a great TV night. They should do this on a Thursday to compete again Spike’s TNA/Bellator Combo thats starting next year.

I am more of a fan of the original Wednesday time slot. It worked well when the show was on Spike. But MMA fans will watch TUF 17 as long as its not on Friday. Cant wait for Sonnen to get under Jones’ skin.

Personally it doesn’t matter what day or what time slot it’s in, I always DVR it and watch it without commercials the next day, sometimes even fast forward through the house drama and straight to the fights…
