The ninth season of The Ultimate Fighter, “Team U.S.A. vs. Team U.K.,” wraps up on Saturday night in Las Vegas. A lightweight showdown between Diego Sanchez and Clay Guida headlines the event in a bout to narrow the field of contenders to the title currently held by UFC champion B.J. Penn.
Ross Pearson vs. Andre Winner will look to earn a TUF contract in the lightweight class’ all-British final, while American DaMarques Johnson and Englishman James Wilks go head-to-head in the welterweight final.
Despite believing he is the true No. 1 contender to Penn’s title and saying of the champion, “That’s a guy I’ve always wanted to fight,” Sanchez insists he is focused for Saturday night. “I’ve got Clay Guida in front of me right now, and that’s the only thing my mind is focused on, putting on the best performance of my career.”
Guida is also zeroed in on the bout in front of him, saying, “I don’t want any excuses after I punish (Diego) and he’s going to be looking around; it’s going to be a really lonely place in that cage when he’s in there with me, I can guarantee that.”
The two made weight without a hitch and had one of the more memorable staredowns in recent memory.
The only fighter failing to make weight was preliminary bout fighter Mike Ciesnoleviscz, who weighed in two pounds over the 206-pound allowable limit for a light heavyweight non-title bout with Tomasz Drwal.
The two later agreed to meet at a catchweight of 208 pounds and Ciesnoleviscz will be penalized 20% of his show money, which will go to Drwal, according to the UFC.
In an interesting side note, Ciesnoleviscz late Thursday night posted on facebook, saying, “Just lost 8 lbs, 14 more to go before ufc weighins at 4 pm tomorrow!! Good times!!”
