UFC Working to Add Women’s 115-Pound Division

Posted on by Ken Pishna

Dana White at UFC 144There was once a time when UFC president Dana White said that women would “never” grace the inside of the Octagon.

Following the unabashed success of starting a women’s 135-pound division, with UFC women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey leading the charge, White on Friday revealed that the UFC is finally ready to take women’s MMA a step further.

The brash UFC president revealed on Friday’s “The Fighter & The Kid” podcast on FoxSports.com that his company is currently working on adding a women’s 115-pound division.

“I’ll give you guys something nobody knows yet,” teased Whited. “We’re actually working on bringing in another division for the women, which I said would never happen for a long time.”

While most would think they would jump up or down one weight class, White said that the plan wasn’t to add 145 pounders or 125 pounders, but the 115-pound strawweight class. Strawweight is limited to fighters weighing 106 pounds up to 115 pounds.

White did not reveal any of the fighters that the UFC was targeting or when he expected the division to debut, but he did reveal part of the reasoning behind the move, and it directly rates to the recent success of women on The Ultimate Fighter.

“When the women fight (on TUF), they’re outrating the men by 44-percent,” said White.

“Never in a million years did I think it would take off the way it has.”

    Ha ha Cyborg!

There is no real division at 145. And 115 would prevent a couple of fighter from jumping ship at 135 to go to 125. It’ll keep bantamweight stocked for a while until they grow enough to make 125. Actually pretty brilliant.

but I want to jump ship to 125 lol

Invicta has 125, unfortunately the division isn’t large enough for women to drop weight. You’d see women like Jessica Eye, Sheila Gaf, and possibly Julie Kedzie, make the cut to 125. Plus others too.

This sucks. How many guys wont get hired or will get cut because of this and therefore deny us deeper divisions. Wish women’s MMA would get its own organization like the relationship UFC had with WEC/Strikeforce. If they are as entertaining as men it will do fine.

I wouldn’t worry about that at the rate the UFC is expanding. There are plans to kick up the events by 200%-300%+ in the coming years. Dana talked about even having simultaneous events going on in different countries. We could have a PPV event in Vegas on the same night as a fight night is going on in Manchester.

Yeah i’m sure manchester would get some great fights that night. If that happens, give us the title fight and give vegas Bisping vs any average MW

i liked it better when there was only 5 weight divisions. now, anyone can be a fighter and get hired by the ufc.

enough of this woman’s crap in MMA. Make the Cyborg Rousey fight and make it quick. Enough of the dodging and protecting foul mouthed Rhonda.
