The season premiere of The Ultimate Fighter and the newest live installment of UFC Fight Night both drew overall ratings of 1.5 on Wednesday, September 19.

The general pattern over the course of the three-hour block of original programming on Spike TV was that the ratings gradually increased over the course of the two-hour UFC Fight Night broadcast, and then gradually decreased over the course of the one-hour Ultimate Fighter broadcast.

The overall rating for any given TV broadcast is rounded to the nearest tenth of a ratings point. The exact average rating of the TUF broadcast was 1.4675, which rounds to 1.5; and the exact average rating of the UFC Fight Night broadcast was 1.545, which also rounds to 1.5 even though it is slightly higher than TUF’s average.

In the case of UFC Fight Night 11, the broadcast out-drew a regular season baseball game on ESPN by impressive margins of 74% in total viewership, 224% in the advertiser-coveted demographic of 18-to-34-year-old males, and 233% in the 18-to-49-year-old male demographic.

UFN 11 Ratings vs. UFC’s Average Ratings; Plus Ratings for Each Individual Fight

The ratings for UFC Fight Night 11 were below the UFC’s average-to-date for live event premieres on Spike TV. Since April 2005, the UFC had 18 live event premieres on Spike TV prior to UFC Fight Night 11, and those 18 broadcasts averaged a 1.8 overall rating, compared to 1.5 for UFN 11.

In the 18-to-34-year-old male demographic, the UFC’s average rating for its first 18 live event premieres on Spike TV was 2.9, compared to 1.9 for UFC Fight Night 11.

In the 18-to-49-year-old male demographic, the UFC’s average rating for its first 18 live event premieres on Spike TV was 2.3, compared to 1.7 for UFC Fight Night 11.

The opening fight on the UFC Fight Night 11 broadcast was Nate Quarry’s comeback victory over Pete Sell, which drew a 1.3 rating. Sell’s previous fight on Spike TV was against Scott Smith in November 2006, and that fight drew a 1.1 rating.

The next fight on the broadcast was Nate Diaz’ victory over Junior Assuncao, which drew a 1.5 rating. Diaz’ previous fight on Spike TV, which was against Manny Gamburyan in June 2007, drew a 2.3 rating.

The next fight was Chris Leben’s win over Terry Martin, which drew a 1.7 rating. Leben’s previous fight on Spike TV was against Jorge Santiago in August 2007, and that fight drew a 1.4 rating.

The main event match-up, featuring Kenny Florian’s win over Din Thomas, maintained the same 1.7 rating that the Leben-Martin fight drew. Florian’s previous fight on Spike TV was against Dokonjonosuke Mishima in April 2007, and that fight drew a 1.1 rating. Thomas’ previous fight on Spike TV was against Rich Clementi in November 2006, and that fight drew a 1.2 rating.

TUF Premiere Ratings vs. Previous TUF Premiere Ratings

The viewership level for The Ultimate Fighter’s season premiere decreased slightly from a 1.6 rating at the beginning of the show to a 1.4 rating at the end of the show, as Mac Danzig’s submission victory over Joe Scarola drew a 1.4 rating.

The overall ratings for the Season Six premiere were up slightly from the Season Five premiere, and down slightly from the Season Four premiere.

The fourth season premiere of TUF drew a 1.7 overall rating in August 2006; the fifth season premiere drew a 1.4 overall rating in April 2007; and the sixth season premiere drew a 1.5 overall rating on Wednesday night.

In the 18-to-34-year-old male demographic, the fourth season premiere of TUF drew a 2.8 rating; the fifth season premiere drew a 1.9 rating; and the sixth season premiere also drew a 1.9 rating.

In the 18-to-49-year-old male demographic, the fourth season premiere of TUF drew a 2.2 rating; the fifth season premiere drew a 1.8 rating; and the sixth season premiere drew a 1.7 rating.

Even with the slight decreases from the previous two season premieres, TUF 6 was still the second most-watched show of the day on cable television in the 18-to-49-year-old male demographic.

Other UFC & Spike TV Ratings

Immediately prior to the live broadcast of UFC Fight Night on Wednesday, September 19, a new episode of UFC Unleashed aired on Spike TV and drew an overall rating of 0.8.

Airing immediately after the season premiere of The Ultimate Fighter on Spike TV was the series premiere of “Manswers,” which drew an overall rating of 0.9.

On Thursday night, September 20, a replay of The Ultimate Fighter drew an overall rating of 0.6, and the second airing of “Countdown to UFC 76″ drew an overall rating of 0.5. The first airing of “Countdown to UFC 76″ on Monday night, September 17, drew an overall rating of 0.2.
