The Ultimate Fighting Championship on Monday announced its second Versus event. UFC on Versus 2: Jones vs. Matyushenko takes place on Aug. 1 at Energy Solutions Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah.
A light heavyweight clash between Jon Jones and Vladimir Matyushenko headlines the card with Mark Munoz facing Yushin Okami in a middleweight showdown in the co-main event.
Viewed as one of the top prospects in all of MMA, Jon “Bones” Jones (10-1) has been a virtual wrecking machine since debuting in the UFC in August 2008. With his only loss coming by way of disqualification after landing illegal elbows on Matt Hamill, the New York native has looked unstoppable in his five UFC fights. His most recent victory came on the first UFC on Versus card where he defeated Brandon Vera.
Russian born fighter Vladimir Matyushenko (24-4) is currently on his second tour of duty with the UFC, where he performed at both heavyweight and light heavyweight. Matyushenko is now on a three-fight winning streak, including two wins in a row in the UFC since returning there in 2009. His most recent bout was a win over Eliot Marshall, also on the UFC on Versus card that Jones headlined with Vera.
Since dropping to middleweight, Mark Munoz (8-1) has won his last three fights including a second round stoppage over former “Ultimate Fighter” winner Kendall Grove in his last fight at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi.
Okami (24-5) has always been a threat to the top contenders in the middleweight division, but has come up short in his two bids to get into title contention. A unanimous decision loss to Rich Franklin in 2007 kept him away from the championship, and then a defeat at the hands of current top contender Chael Sonnen late last year. He is coming off a victory over Lucio Linhares in March at UFC Fight Night 21: Florian vs. Gomi.
