The Ultimate Fighting Championship made its first trip to Australia’s Gold Coast on Saturday for UFC on FX 6: Sotiropoulos vs. Pearson, the de facto TUF: The Smashes finale at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre in Queensland.
As usual, the promotion handed out UFC on FX 6 fighter bonuses, this time to the tune of $40,000 for each of the award winners.
There were no submissions, so the Submission of the Night honor was left on the table, but there were plenty of knockouts to go round and a solid Fight of the Night winner.
Although there were five knockouts to choose from, it was TUF: The Smashes competitor Benny Alloway that took home the honors. He dropped Manny Rodriguez late in the opening round of their fight with a front kick to the face, pounced on him, and finished the fight with several punches, putting Rodriguez out cold, earning the UFC on FX 6 Knockout of the Night and a $40,000 check.
Fight of the Night honors went to the first fight on the card, Nick Penner vs. Cody Donovan.
Penner dropped Donovan twice in the opening minutes of the fight, but Donovan never gave up, constantly searching for submissions each time he was dropped. But the tables turned when Donovan dropped Penner late in the first round and finished him off with a flurry of strikes to net the victory in his Octagon debut.
It was a short, explosive bout, ending at the 4:35 mark, but it was a strong enough effort from both men for them to earn the Fight of the Night.
