Round 1: Guida comes out a ball of fire, hair in corn rows due to Maynard’s camp’s complaints about his shaggy locks. Maynard is content early to sit back and look for the counter as Guida dances all over the cage, constantly changing angles and levels. They exchange a few early punches, but no lengthy engagements. Maynard is trying to get his jab and straight right going, while Guida is swinging with big arcing punches, neither landing much in the first half of the round. Guida sneaks in a jab as the round is winding down. Maynard answers, but then Guida comes back with a more significant combination in the waning moments. Round 2: Maynard takes a poke in the eye as soon as they start the round, but takes little down time. Guida is right back to his bouncing, bobbing, weaving, non-stop movement, trying to keep Maynard out of any sort of rhythm. Maynard starts firing, but looks a little frustrated as he’s unable to land. Guida lands a one-two punch combination and follows with a kick to the head. Maynard sneaks in a right hand, but Guida answers with a kick to the face and follows with a couple solid punches. MMAWeekly.com scores round two 10-9 for Guida.
Round 3: Guida opens with a knee that grazes Maynard and follows with a strong punch. Guida is now showing some different movement than the first two rounds, dropping his hands a la Ali, doing a lot of backpedaling. Maynard finally shoots, but Guida shucks it off. Guida lands a straight right then Maynard throws his hands up in the air in frustration, surely what Guida was hoping for. Maynard starts swinging big, running Guida down across the cage, but he can’t catch him. Again he throws his hands up, imploring Guida to stand and trade. Guida keeps up his Energize Bunny tactics, however. Maynard shoots, doesn’t get the takedown, but does land a couple knees to the body. MMAWeekly.com scores round three 10-9 for Maynard.
Round 4: Guida gets in a couple one-two combinations early in the round, whereas in round three, he didn’t land hardly anything. Maynard finally catches up to him, pulls his head down and lands a couple knees. Maynard finding more success now, lands a right hand. Guida starts backpedaling again, but this time Maynard lands a right hand that snaps his head back. Guida makes him chase again for a while, but then Maynard lands another right hand. Maynard shoots, Guida defends, but Maynard Thai clinches him and lands some knees. Maynard goes off on Guida, yelling at him to engage. Maynard drops his hands, forcing Guida to come at him. Maynard eats a hard shot and then wraps up a guillotine choke, but Guida escapes and lands a couple shoulder punches just before the end of the round. Round 5: Guida starts with a sharp jab to the jaw. Maynard answers with one of his own. Maynard is cutting off the cage better now and lands a couple looping right hand hooks. Guida lands a right kick to the head and followed with a one-two punch combination. Maynard quickly recovers and drives a right hand into Guida’s body. Guida returns fire with a punch combination that finds home. Guida is ducking and dodging again, making Maynard miss again. Guida runs away from Maynard and the referee warns Guida for it. Maynard shoots on Guida, who sprawls out. Maynard has him pressed against the fence and drives some knees to the thigh and body of Guida, who finally regains his feet. Maynard keeps Guida’s head down and lands a couple more knees. MMAWeekly.com scores round five 10-9 and the fight 48-47 for Guida.
