UFC on FX 1 Results: Jim Miller Subs Melvin Guillard In First

Posted on by Erik Fontanez

Jim Miller was victorious in his UFC on FX 1 main event against Melvin Guillard. A first-round finish capped off the evening of fights in Nashville.

Guillard started out intense and stayed on the feet, despite Miller’s attempted takedowns. He threw a couple knees and even caught Miller with a good punch that sent him reeling backwards.

One more Guillard flying knee was caught by Miller, allowing him to secure the takedown. After scrambling on the ground, Guillard got to his feet and Miller secured his back. Miller locked his arms around his opponent’s neck as Guillard fell back. The rear-naked choke was tight and Guillard had no choice but to tap.

The finish came at 2:04 of the first round.

In his post-fight interview with Jon Anik, Miller admitted that Guillard’s power was something he’s never faced in the UFC lightweight division before.

“I don’t get knocked down often and he knocked me down,” he said. “He hits hard, man. There are a lot of guys… in this weight class and the one above us that don’t want to fight that kid.”

With the win, Miller improves to 21-3 and gets back on the winning track following a decision loss to Benson Henderson at UFC Live: Hardy vs. Lytle. After a five-fight win-streak, Guillard now drops his second in a row.

Maybe Melvin’s back to his cokehead ways and losing that focus he suppposedly had for his last few fights…lol!

    • http://www.bloodyfists.net/forums/index.php SHORT_BUS

Or maybe Jim Miller’s a pretty good fighter.

      • jmat13

Short I’ll give you Miller isn’t a pretty good fighter. He’s one hell of a fighter.

    • jmat13

Talk like that Santz I don’t like in my sport. He had a bad night. What can he do? Could it maybe just be Miller had a great night?

    • Santz

Oh come on guys, just teasing Melvin! Miller is a great fighter and a top contender, I know that, but I’ve never respected that cocky little cokehead Guillard so just poking fun at the loss. I don’t respect drug users for sh1t so awesome job taking him out Jim!

  • DrkDisciple

Bravo Melvin, leaving team Jackson was a great move!

    • jmat13

Do you train at either Jackson or Blackzilla? How would you know?

      • DrkDisciple

Here is what I know. Melvin joins team Jackson gets on a winning streak and is roughly only fight away from a title shot. Melvin starts training with team Blackzilla and loses two in a row and looks bad in the process. Now tell me sherlock do you see a pattern?

  • jmat13

I don’t fight pro but I do love to train. Miller took a few big shots from a guy that most can’t take them from. When you get hit hard and can still fight it does I feel give you an edge a little. Miller proved that. He kept his cool and sunk in a great choke. It is what it is. I have seen Melvin knock guys out cold. Face down. Miller is just tuff as nails. I wouldn’t want to get hit by Melvin and I’m pretty sure Miller will say he’d be OK with never getting punched by him again. It’s a fight. Great job to Miller. I know I can take a pretty good punch and would never want to be hit by Melvin. So I’m not talkin BS here. Miller has a chin and can keep cool.

Melvin needs to work his submission defense… he has 9/10 losses to submissions and 7 of them were in the 1st round

    • jmat13

I really don’t think it’s he has lack of defense over his style of fighting is very aggresive. That style no matter how good the defense is will still lead to small windows of chance. I think the defense is there. It’s overcommiting and style. If you are fighting top of chain guys I don’t care how good or strong the fence is. A guy like Miller, or J Lo or anyone will make you pay. Melvin gave Miller the window and he saw it. Took advantage and won.

      • phrankthetank

Dude, his submission defense is garbage. How often have you seen melon escape a submission attempt. Plain and simple he needs to put more time in on the mat. He’s got the striking, his takedown defense has improved, but his bjj is seriously lacking.

        • phrankthetank

That was supposed to be Melvin not melon… Damn autocorrect lol

    • jmat13

Look at all the stats you want. I’m looking at the fighter. Change the game plan. If you think Melvin can’t defend than go roll with him. It’s not the sub defense.

      • XIRandomHeroIX

You need the skill set to fix the gameplan. Fact is he walks himself into positions that some very basic BJJ would keep him out of. I think if he does like he says and ups his BJJ over this next year that there is potential to see him fighting for the title in late 2013 to early 2014.

  • jmat13

Even more as a lover of physics. Just getting clipped by Guillard. Guy has litteral bombs in both hands. On the same right you have to give it up to Joe for taking a shot or 2 of that. I would like to see Miller and J Lo. 2 great fighters that just bring it. I will say I have to favor J in that one. Up and comer more and more. Just wait.

Cocky, arrogant, over-hyped, trash talker, has no wrestling or submission defense. can’t back it up. Yeah that about described Melvin. Let’s go back to rear-naked choke defense 101. Then…make a go again but this time try Strikeforce or a local promotion.

  • Santz

Ok after reading the rest of jmat13′s comments, I can obviously see he’s a Guillard fan and probably the only person on this site that’s a Guillard fan…lol! The guy will never be champion material…and I would love to roll with him a snap his arm with an effortless armbar that he’ll easily trap himself into cause his BJJ sucks. Almost as bad as the way you do his nuts…does he dye it blond down there too…lol!

  • 155 n aouta ya weight class

  • Mario

Never again will I root for Guillard :(

    What a letdown!

  • Mma fanatic

Melvin try to cut 145 and Jose Aldo has a contender! that would be a hellofa slugfest! Miller is a savage!

    • DrkDisciple

Seriously dude what would Aldo gain by fighting this guy? The answer is nothing! Plus I dont want to hear about him being transfered over to strikeforce to fight Gilbert. That would be a joke.

  • phrankthetank

Lot of guillard hate on this site! The guy is entertaining to watch, he just doesn’t have the ground game. If you’re trying to keep it standing, throwing flyin knees might not be the best idea. Hopefully he comes back stronger in his next fight. What blows my mind is that he’s 0/2 since he started deviating from Jackson’s. It mau be coincidence, but I wonder what really made him leave.

  • Mma fanatic

Aldo has nothing to gain but us fans could be in for a killer slugfest! I agree tho Aldo gains nothing!!

    • DrkDisciple

We agree! Would make alot more sense for Aldo to go up to 155 where there is plenty of quality fighters!
