January kicks off a lot of first for the Ultimate Fighting Championship as it embarks on a seven-year (at least) journey with the Fox family of networks. Friday marks its maiden voyage with its first live event on the FX network, UFC on FX 1: Guillard vs. Miller at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville.
The main event pits two lightweights trying to fight their ways back into title contention, as Melvin Guillard squares off with Jim Miller.
Duane “Bang” Ludwig, who was recently etched into the UFC history books for being recognized for the fastest knockout in the promotion’s history, is expected to throw down in the co-main event against tough Midwestern product Josh Neer.
Guillard and Miller are both looking to bounce back from losses that derailed their immediate title hopes.
Miller had no issue making weight at 155, telling fans to “expect a great fight between Melvin and I. We’re both two of the best in the division.”
Guillard had a minor issue making weight. He stepped on the scale at 156.5 pounds, but hit the 156 mark after dropping his drawers behind some towels.
Many people have been calling Guiilard the underdog in this fight, but he didn’t seem to care.
“I’ve been like that my whole life, so I’m used to that,” he told UFC broadcaster Jon Anik. “I’ve been an underdog my whole life.”
This is Ludwig’s third fight back at welterweight. He’s gone 2-0 thus far, and easily made weight at 170.5 pounds. Neer is on a five-fight streak, also having no issues by stepping on the scale at 171 pounds.
The rest of the roster stepped on the scale, everyone making weight without incident, save for Fabricio Camoes, who was 1.5 pounds over. He later returned to the scale to make weight at 156 pounds.
