Cub Swanson WEC 44Two of the UFC’s top featherweights, Cub Swanson and Dustin Poirier made it clear from the opening bell that neither of them wanted to leave their UFC on Fuel TV 7 fight nor their futures in the hands of the judges in London.

But that’s exactly where they wound up when all was said and done, keeping it exciting from bell to bell.

Swanson took control early, landing with his erratic assortment of strikes, primarily scoring with his boxing with a few jumping knees mixed in. Poirier was keeping it a little more orthodox, attacking with low kicks and trying to score takedowns.

As much as Swanson controlled the opening stanza, Poirier stepped his game up in round two, at one point scoring with a well-timed takedown off of a missed Swanson spinning backfist. Swanson was aggressive on the mat, however, making it difficult for Poirier to take advantage of the takedown.

Poirier opened the final round strong, landing with some punch combinations that had Swanson moving backwards, but a couple strong takedowns of his own and some very aggressive attacks on the mat swung the fight back in Swanson’s favor.

It was a solid back and forth affair, but Swanson took home the unanimous decision, which amounts to his fourth consecutive victory and leaves him knocking on the door of a title shot.
